I have to drive an hour to my university, however i don’t know if this would be cheaper than accommodation? What do you guys think?

How much is parking? Insurance? Fuel? Maintenance?
How much lower is your student finance for living at home?
An hours drive is a LOT of time every week. Assuming you are in 4 days a week that’s 10 hours of your time that you can’t use for work, study or relaxing every week. More if you’re delayed by traffic or similar. You could work for 10 hours a week at minimum wage if your commute was tiny and help cover your costs and increase your employability post-degree.
Why not live in halls for first year to help you get settled and make friends? If you find it’s unaffordable after that year then you can always switch to commuting for later years of your course.

Universities ignore that information on ucas (it’s used for broad stats but not individuals).
Your university should have information on their website about when and how you can book accommodation.

That’s fine, once you’re sure you should be able to log into your application and make a change to update it to living away from home (just remember that it’s changing “where will you be living” from “with parents” to away from home - not just updating your address…your address isn’t what they base your loan amount on)

I hope it goes well and you enjoy it

And if not then at least you've learned something useful from the experience and can move back home knowing that

Hi there,

From reading the thread it seems like you have changed your mind on commuting and are planning on staying at home now. I think that this sounds like a good idea as with things such as traffic, this could add a lot of time onto your commute and could make it seem a lot worse. If you have uni at 9am it is likely to be busy so living at Uni will make having a 9am a lot easier!

If you are still on the fence about which one to do, I would suggest practising the drive one day. It's a good idea to do this at peak times, so if you were to have a 9am or if you were to leave uni to come home at 5pm. I know it sounds like a long idea but it will help you to understand what it will be like and if it is reasonable or not!

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂
