how do you express yourself through art when you're too emotional to do it well??

like how are you supposed to paint/draw/write anything meaningful when you're actually in the midst of all the emotions? like really full of rage or sobbing or something. and then when you've calmed down 'making art' just feels absurd and u just feel flat.

You should check out a podcast episode with Steve Huston, I think it's the sketchy van podcast, and he talks a lot about how as artists we struggle to be creative when we are stressed or anxious etc., and it made a lot sense for me in why this thing that I love as a form of self expression (art) was so difficult for me to face creating at the times when I've felt I needed it the most. One really interesting idea he has is that we have a "thing" that we're good at drawing that is like our fall back , when we don't have the emotional energy to face failure we can draw that thing that we're good at and it's reassuring and builds our confidence. For me it's portraits. Check the podcast out for sure
