Personal Emails From Unis

Hi everyone. I applied to study English Literature and Creative Writing (joint honours) at UEA and Lancaster, and Creative Writing (single honours) at Edge Hill and Brighton, and have had the honour of being accepted into all four. I take so much pride in my writing, so getting accepted into my aspirational choices (especially considering my grades didn’t quite meet the entry requirements) makes me so happy.

A couple of days after being accepted into Lancaster, I received an email from the professor of modern literature saying how he enjoyed reading my personal statement. He went into detail about the specific points he liked the most and was very thorough. I was very surprised and grateful to hear such lovely comments about my application.

In order to progress my application with the University of East Anglia (UEA), I had to submit a portfolio of my creative writing. Two days after sending the portfolio, I was accepted, and yesterday I received an email titled ‘Excellent Writing’ from the course director with specific comments from the reader of my portfolio. I won’t go into much detail, but he said my writing was impressive, confident and accomplished, and he spoke about a few of the pieces before telling me that I clearly have ‘huge talent’ and they hope I join them in September.

As UEA and Lancaster are two of the best known and most prestigious universities for creative writing in the UK, I’m shocked than I received a personal email from both of them. I’m still deciding where to accept, and I’d like to know if this is a common thing that happens for marketing purposes or something, or if this is really what they say it is, as if it’s something they do for all students I don’t want it to sway my decision of where I study (I know it shouldn’t anyway, but it would be nice to go somewhere that genuinely sees talent in me, and enough to contact me personally!).

Sorry for the long post. I’m an English student

Creative writing degrees have fallen in popularity over the last 3-5 years.

It's not standard for staff to write customised emails but it's not unknown either. Particularly where a university isn't recruiting as many students as they'd like (low recruitment is not an indication of the quality of the course - it's an indication of popularity among 17 year olds)

Where it happens they'll send these sorts of emails to all offer holders

Hi there,

Its really good to hear that you've received offers from all of your choices, especially the two you are most keen on 🙂

I would try and reflect on which university has the course content you are most interested in and you think will help you get to where you want to be as a writer in the future. If you're studying something which is keeping you inspired and engaged then this will make it easier to do well and stay motivated!

I'd also ask yourself what environment you'd like to be in - the UEA/East Anglia in general are quite a bit more rural and a lot further down south than Lancaster. Have you visited both local cities? Where do you feel more at home? How far would you be happy being from your family and your home town?

I would try not to be swayed too much by league tables alone and instead think about which course has the content and modules which are right for you and where you'd feel happiest 🙂

I hope this helps and best of luck with your next steps!

Congratulations to your offer and the feedback on your work. Both UEA and Lancaster are good unis.

While personal emails ftom unis may marketing strategies of some unis to attract applicants to under-subscribed courses. It's quite unlikely your case because, as you mentioned, the profs referred specific points and details of your PS and portfolio. It must be more than mere marketing strategies.

The subject you chose to study requires intensive personal tutoring and feedback on coursework. In this regard, I would lean towards the uni that gave more critical comments and suggestions for further improving your work.

Hi @afrasaun5

Wow! I think that's a real testament to your writing skills that you've received two responses about your work. I have asked this question to our team and will hopefully have some answers for you soon! In the meantime, could you consider asking for a virtual meeting to learn a bit more about the courses? I did this for my masters and got a really good vibe from one of the lecturers which helped me make my decision. Sometimes speaking to people face to (virtual) face can give you a vibe of if they are being genuine of not. Of course, going to Open Days really helps with this, I went to several and spoke to students and staff, and quickly realised where I did (and more importantly, didn't) want to study.

I think another important aspect is finding somewhere you can see yourself studying and living. You mention that it would be nice to go somewhere that genuinely sees talent in you (and I got this from UEA when I went for my Open Day), but are there any other aspects you want to consider, like nightlife or location?

Hopefully I can reply again soon when I have a concrete answer, but if you have any questions in the meantime, let me know!

However flattering it might feel - its a marketing email and all other successful applicants will have received similar. I suspect that its some standard phrases with 'insert here' comments about your writing.

Lancaster and UEA are both good Unis but very different so if you have not been to their Open Days, have a look at Campus Tour films etc on YouTube and/or go to any Offer Holder visit days. A joint subject degree is useful - and 'English Lit and ....' will always seem more credible than just 'Creative Writing' to mainstream employers. If either of these courses offer a work placement or study abroad, this is a big plus for your graduate CV.

Congrats on your offers! I’m also applying for English lit and Creative writing at UEA, and received a personalised “excellent writing” email from them! I am torn between firming UEA or royal holloway but, similarly to you, I like the idea of going somewhere that personally recognises my talent, so their email has been persuading me a bit. I’m not actually sure what the point of my response is lol but i just wanted to say that im in the same boattt

Hi there,

First off huge congratulations on your offers and those incredibly thoughtful responses from both Lancaster and UEA! That’s such an achievement and speaks volumes about the quality of your writing. Honestly, not every applicant gets personal responses like that. Universities do receive a high volume of applications, and while some departments do send generalised follow-ups, the fact that both UEA and Lancaster academics took the time to comment in detail, especially on specific elements of your writing, suggests they genuinely saw something in your work.

I’m actually doing my PhD at UEA (in a different school), and I’ve found the academic community here to be really warm and genuinely invested in its students. From what you’ve said, I’d say they really meant it and that kind of personal encouragement could make all the difference in your creative journey.

Wherever you choose, you clearly have talent and drive and I wish you all the very best!

Let me know if you want to chat more about the course or what it’s like here!

All the best,
Daniel

Hello @afrasaun5

Congratulations on your offer from Lancaster! I believe its pretty rare that departments will reach out to applicants with a personalised email expressing their interest in your application, however, every department may be different (I'm a Law student and have never heard of this from my friends). I believe that the personalised email is likely a testament of how good you application was - take some pride in that!

I cannot offer any perspective as to what it's like to study EL&CW at Lancaster but I would really encourage you to reach out to some of our students that have, they can be accessed through out unibuddy page which can be found HERE , please make full use of this and ask them any questions you may have!

Taylor (Lancaster Uni Student Ambassador).
