A career change?

Hi,

After a decade where I have worked in administration and marketing/communications, I'm at an absolute loss as to where my next, permanent job is going to be.

I left my last job in October 2023 due to mental health struggles in and out of work, and except for a Christmas job in a warehouse, I've not worked.

But now that my bank balance isn't looking great and to build up a routine, I've been actively looking. I've had three interviews last year for administration roles which I've been unsuccessful for. I assume that my admin experience isn't recent enough to be considered or, I suspect, they have an internal candidate lined up.

My confidence is low so I'm applying for these jobs from a low base and perhaps hoping I can put aside these work fraud feelings and be comfortable and competent in the jobs.

But I'm beginning to wonder whether I change my jobs to something else completely. I liked being being physically active in the Christmas job so that's something I could look into.

A new career but what could be, I don't know. Are there industries and professions where they are actively recruiting for new talent?

In order to boost your low morale, make finding a job your new job! Get up in the morning, plan your day, search for roles, apply for roles, contact recruitment agencies, work on your CV for each specific job. Take a lunch break. Keep a spreadsheet of your applications and their status. Clock on and off basically. I also think picking up the phone and calling people who are advertising vacancies is much more effective than emailing randomly. This may help your mood and attitude and therefore appear to employers as more employable thereby winning a job vacancy.
Sometimes finding a new career is not the answer but getting into a different sector can be the change you need.
LinkedIn has lots of recruitment agencies giving out free advice about searching for new jobs and how to keep your chin up while it can be time-consuming - but what else have you got to do today! Hope that helps a bit.

Hey, I totally get where you're coming from—job hunting can feel like a never-ending rollercoaster, especially when you're dealing with low confidence and mental health struggles. But honestly, you're doing amazing just by actively looking and thinking about making a change! 💪
So, if you’re wondering about industries where they’re desperately looking for new talent (and maybe where you won’t feel like a fraud), here’s a few ideas:

1.

Tech & IT: I know, tech might sound like a foreign language right now, but hear me out—there are roles that don’t require coding expertise. You can get into project management, customer support, or even tech sales. The best part? A lot of companies will train you! So you can feel like a total tech wizard in no time. 💻✨

2.

Healthcare: This one's a little more traditional, but healthcare is always on the lookout for new people. If you’re into helping others and don’t mind a bit of hustle, roles like medical assistant, support staff, or even admin positions are high demand. It’s not all scrubs and stethoscopes—there are plenty of non-clinical options too! 💉👩*⚕️

3.

Logistics & Warehousing: Okay, I get it, you’re like, “Warehouse job? But I don’t want to be carrying boxes forever.” But hear me out—if you enjoyed the physical aspect of your Christmas gig, warehouse roles, delivery jobs, or even supply chain stuff could be a solid option. Plus, you're not

It might not be glamorous, but it’s high demand and offers stability. Plus, you don’t have to wear scrubs to be part of the action—admin roles are always open! If you enjoyed the physical side of your Christmas warehouse job, logistics and warehousing could be a solid option too. There’s always a need for warehouse staff, delivery drivers, and supply chain professionals, and you get to keep moving around instead of sitting at a desk all day. The point is, there’s a ton of industries out there with opportunities—just gotta find the right fit for you. And remember, you’re definitely not alone in this!

Thanks for the informative reply 👍🏽

I'm keeping an eye out for vacancies in health care but having interviewed for admin positions, I'm not sure I would get those roles. A porter role seems interesting perhaps.

Are there any good places to look for new opportunities in I.T?

Go to college and get a City and Guilds lvl 3 award in Plumbing. Plumbers are low in supply and always high in demand, and because so many of them become independant contractors it's easy to get hired by a company when you're newly qualified.

Warehouses usually take on people quite a bit. And there are quite a lot of warehouses around.
