Not sure about what uni to pick ? What are people’s experiences/ advice ?

Hello,

I’ve applied to Uni of Bath,( haven’t heard back from them) for marketing, Royal holloway for marketing and management with a year in business, Queen mary’s for Psychology (ABB) and Uni of exeter (BBB) for marketing.
My subjects are Business Psychology and Art

i’m predicted A*AA,
i’m really not sure about meeting the grade requirements ..
i’ve really fallen off my game as of recently , I still revise a lot ( you could check my GYG) but equally I stress out just as much and nothing goes in…

What are my options if I fail my exams , and what are peoples experiences doing psych or marketing at Uni? is it even worth it ?
-I haven’t seen them Irl bc I just spend 24/7 revising, I was thinking of doing so during my gap year
It’s natural to feel anxious about not being able to live up to your predicted grades, but don't despair as this is an opportune moment for reflection! I have recently been chatting to USW students who went through Clearing last year and you won't believe how common this is when applying to uni.

Really assess your interests and career goals. Think about what you actually want to do, whether that’s university, a particular career, or something else entirely.

Talk to your teachers, career advisors, or a mentor who can provide advice and support to help you plan ahead.

Stay open to opportunities. You might find new paths that are more aligned with your interests and abilities.

Info on Clearing for you.
Explore alternative courses. You might need to consider a different course if your original choice isn’t possible, but this can still open doors to other career pathways. If you’re set on a particular course, a gap year might give you the time to improve your qualifications or experiences before reapplying.

A psychology degree is only good if you are very flexible with a career within various sectors. If you work hard I am sure you can achieve good grades, Lancaster has a good marketing degree.

Hi DD,

Thanks for reaching out, and I completely empathise with your situation as I too felt quite overwhelmed doing my A Levels.

Its good to hear you're looking into contingency plans but I would say that with PGs like A*AA your teachers clearly believe you're capable of them - perhaps try to believe in yourself a bit more, especially as you appear to be working really hard already!

I did my degree in psychology knowing that I didn't want to go into clinical psychology, just knowing it was a subject I enjoyed and would open up doors to a variety of careers in different fields and businesses. Equally, marketing is a really interesting choice which could also open up a lot of roles - both inside and outside of marketing, and so it really comes down to which you think you would enjoy more and find the most fulfilling for 3-4 years and see where it leads you in terms of your career options.

If you are not ready to go to uni this year or you don't do as well as you expect on results day:

Resit the A Levels you want to do better in and reapply in the main cycle next year.

Take a gap year if you don't feel ready yet - take some time to reflect on your goals and where you want to be, perhaps do some part-time work, volunteering and/or travelling and apply again next year. Perhaps what you need is a bit of headspace to evaluate what you may want to do.

You don't necessarily need to go through clearing unless you are especially keen on going to uni this year. However I would advise it would be better to apply next year instead so you are more likely to get into a choice you'd like. Just remember that you are very young and theres no rush to have everything figured out right now and its normal to not be sure. You have plenty of time to figure out what you want to do!

Also, try not to be stressed - you sound like you are doing all the right things. Just have some self-belief and make sure you take care of yourself and have plenty of time to yourself to unwind outside your revision too.

I hope this helps, and best of luck 🙂

Hi,
Thanks so much for the reply !
I was wondering how you dealt with stress during A-levels because i’m really struggling with it at the moment.
Any advice ?
I know my subjects aren’t particularly hard it’s more that the fear of missing out on offers I might accept in the end /fear of failure is quite tricky to get over 😰

Hi again,

Yeah, its so hard to not worry about failing isn't it? But one thing I learnt which I wish I'd reflected on more at sixth form is: the past is the best predictor of the future. And your situations seems to be:

1.

Your teachers have predicted you A*AA

2.

You spend plenty of time revising

3.

You've been sensible and chosen unis with a range of grade requirements and are also thinking ahead of a contingency plan such as a gap year or resits - good organisation

From what you've said there is no solid evidence that you will do badly other than your own worries. I think your only real barrier is the fear of the unknown?

How I would deal with stress is to try to bring myself back to earth and as corny as it sounds just accept that I can only do my best and that doesn't need to be perfect. You're only human and if you're feeling stressed then its not surprising you're feeling like none of your revision is sinking in.

However from what you've said, you're doing all the right things and so if you continue to revise regularly, get plenty of support from teachers and keep on top of your work/practice then you will most likely be fine. Try not to doubt yourself, your teachers have predicted you A*AA for a reason 🙂

I hope this helps, best of luck ad please do reach out if you have any more questions!
