university of edinburgh accomodation

hi! im currently selecting my accommodation for 25/26 uni of edinburgh, and i was just wondering if anyone has any opinions or experience on the ones i plan on choosing:
brae house, salisbury court, shrubhill, beaverbank, and murano
i really want to stay in single en-suite. please let me know!!
+ did any of you get allocated to ones that you chose? or did you get allocated to a random one? if so, was it because your application was late?

Hi, I’m also applying for accommodation for the 25/26 year so I can’t say anything from experience. But just from speaking to students and doing research, I’ve heard that Salisbury court is really not worth the money. It’s good and all but rubbish value for money.

That is just what I’ve heard though so don’t take my word for it. I think beaverbank isn’t too bad but it’s one of, if not the furthest from main campus. The bus system in Edinburgh is decent so shouldn’t be too much of a worry but for context, it is 40mins walk to George square. I suppose it depends on where ur classes will mainly be (I’m doing medicine so I’ll be near main campus most of the time)

As for the other 3 you’ve listed, from what I’ve heard they are all good options both money wise and quality wise. They also aren’t too far which is good. I’m pretty sure Murano and shrubhill are almost identical. I would definitely consider keeping maybe one or two shared bathroom options as they are a little more budget friendly and sometimes u would still manage to get one where ur only sharing between 3 or 4 people. Plus, just because it is shared, doesn’t mean that it is limited to one bathroom per flat. Some options allow 2 bathrooms to be shared between a flat of 6 so not too bad. They have details of number of bathrooms per flat for each accommodation on the website. If it isn’t needed for a medical option, I don’t think en-suite is quite as important as it might seem

Hi!

I'm also applying for accommodation for 25/26. I'll be studying Eng Lit and Lang. I'm looking at a few similar ones to you, so I'll be popping into this chat often for opinions haha! xx

Best of luck!

hey! im a first year living in murano so can offer a bit of advice. i applied to all self-catered, shared bathroom places in the city centre but ended up randomly allocated in murano - a lot of people i know from here had the same experience. if this happens, don't be afraid to fight for what you want! i really wish i had tbh.
murano and shrubhill are basically the same in terms of price, rooms and location, and whilst the rooms are nice (if you can look past the bright green noticeboards) I would say that they are *very* quiet places. this might work for you though! the area is really nice although far away from the city centre and most other accommodations. people under 22 get free bus travel and the buses are quite reliable so this isn't too much of an issue, but do consider that its about a 20 minute walk to george square and 50 to pollock (if you end up with friends there) so can be quite inconvenient at times. also the lights in the kitchen and your bathrooms are automatic which is certainly a unique feature, and the laundry here is more expensive for some reason even though everywhere uses the same app. they are about 5 minutes away from a big lidl which is much quieter than the one in the city centre and a short walk away from a large tesco too. i have a friend in beaverbank and it's definitely the most far out accommodation with even less buses than murano & shrubhill, but its biggest pro is the big lidl basically on site.
i don't know much about brae or salisbury, but their locations are much more central than the other two. i think salisbury is the most expensive self-catered accommodation and therefore probably the nicest, but i'm not too sure. some of the rooms in brae have good views of arthur's seat!
if you can make it to edinburgh before applying, i would definitely recommend walking to each of the sites to get an understanding of their location. on open days you might be able to view rooms, but from what i remember i only toured rooms of places in pollock so that might not be too relevant for you.

overall id say that the en-suite accommodations are significantly more expensive (almost unfairly so), which hasn't really been worth it for me as it wasn't something that was important to be when i applied, however if you are willing to pay more for it then go for it! i think the most important things to consider other than price and bathrooms are location and number of people in a flat.
hope this helps!

just a little update on my accom situation, i ended up applying for brae house twice (normal single and large single), along with salisbury, murano, and shrubhill. i actually used to study in edinburgh so i know the city quite well, so my concern isn't really location since i know how to get around quite well but more about the quality of the accommodation and what people have experienced... and i also just really want ensuite and self-catered cause i love cooking for myself and having my own private space 😗 but yeah i don't have a preference on my accom i selected so just hoping that i get allocated to one of these!!!

thank you!!! i'm not too concerned about budget but more about my comfort cause i love my own space... but if i do end up getting shared i wouldn't really mind! but i did end up applying to all of them except beaverbank (i did brae x2)
