Camp America during uni?

I’m working at a summer camp this year after my IB exams and I was wondering if it is feasible to do it next year too, during the summer between first year and second year at uni. I’m hopefully going Oxford so I know the workload will be high but is there time for 8 weeks of camp? Like the time of uni is fine but do you normally get set lots of reading or do you need to revise a lot?
If anyone goes uni or has done a summer camp whilst at uni could answer that would so helpful!

why is it awful? thats kind of a bold statement to make without any evidence to back it up. This kind of opinion could ruin someones summer

Hi @Jinglebells234,

That sounds like an amazing opportunity! Universities usually don’t set much formal work over the summer, apart from some readings or prep for the new academic year so if the timing works for you, I’d definitely encourage you to go for it.

For context, I’m currently doing a Master’s and writing a 20,000-word dissertation over the summer, but I’m still managing to take part in a month-long summer programme in Canada. With a bit of planning, it’s absolutely doable.

Experiences like this are incredibly valuable not just for your CV, but also for the chance to live abroad and meet people from all over the world.

Hope that helps, and best of luck with your IB exams! 😊

its a bit of a tricky one, totally depends on what your exam timetable is like as mines this year run into June then have lots of social things planned after so I actually have 2 days between coming home from uni and flying out to camp! you won't have work to complete over the summer unless your on a specific course (I know things like archeology require summer things). its totally doable but requires a bit more planning I would say!

There will be work to do over the summer at Oxford. Most students manage to combine this with travel and/or paid work, but 8 weeks is a large amount of time to take out for an Oxford student so you would have to work really hard on academic studies the rest of the long vacation. It depends what course you are doing as to how much vacation work is set. How intensive is the camp work? Would you be able to do any reading or revision in the evenings for example?

No i don’t think I’d get that much time off to study- or i would be too tired/not dedicated enough to actually get myself to study- Thank you so much for all the replies it is really appreciated

I also know a few who ended up spending nearly more than they earned on Camp America trying to get out of the country - what do you have to say about that? sure that’s just a ‘good time?’?

don't see how that's possible form most expensive package (flights included) its like just under 700 and then you get paid at least 1200 your first summer? I would also add going into to camp America with the mindset of making money is not what its about - yes its a job but your paying for the experience of over 2 months abroad, going by yourself, meeting new people and immersing yourself in a different culture.

there is thousands of different camps all over the US - special needs, religious, Girl Scouts etc. travelling and living in a different country for that period of time you will find yourself learning and experience how they live (culture) as will travelling afterwards with the friends you've made. If you against new experiences or done it yourself and had a bad time then that's fine but you shouldn't be negative about someone wanting advice to try something new.
