The Student Room Group

Looking for tips and just anyone interested rlly.

Hello, my name is Misha, I am a y11 student who is interested in medicine.
My GCSEs:
Higher Maths (OCR)
Triple Science (AQA all higher)
English Language (AQA)
Higher Spanish (AQA)
Geography (Edexcel B)
Food Preparation and Nutrition (AQA)
I did english lit last year and got a 7.

Tbh I am struggling with motivation, wishing for all 9s but not possible. Next year I am studying at Sixth form and for A-levels I picked ; Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and an EPQ. My dream uni is KCL where I would like to study medicine.

I just made this for anyone who wants to be moots or has any tips for exams.

Edit: Apologies for the late update, and for not replying to your comments, I have tried but my replies didn't send for some reason :frown:. I have been very busy but I have gotten my results and I have done alright.
Results:
Maths- 8
English Language- 8
Biology- 8
Chemistry- 8
Physics- 6
Geography- 8
Food Preparation and nutrition- 8
Spanish- 6

I am happy, though I did wish to get some 9s, but I was close to the grade boundaries. Now at Sixth Form I am taking Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Core Maths. At the moment I do not have any space for an EPQ so I will be doing that next year. However, I would like to thank you all so much for your support and helping me with my motivation, I couldn't have done it without you guys. <3

Hey Misha!
First off, your GCSE choices and A-level picks look super solid for medicine—KCL is a great goal! It's completely normal to feel a dip in motivation, especially when aiming high, but don’t be too hard on yourself. Consistency matters more than perfection.
A few tips for exams:

Active recall & past papers The best way to prep for science/maths-heavy subjects. Start with blurting and spaced repetition.

Prioritize weaknesses 9s in every subject may not be realistic, but pushing borderline grades up is!

Don’t burn out Sixth form is intense, and medicine is a marathon, not a sprint. Find time for things that make you happy.

EPQ If you link it to medicine, it could boost your application! Maybe something bioethics-related?

You got this! Feel free to reach out if you ever need study strategies or just want to chat about the journey. 🚀

Hi Misha! One thing I am immensely gratefull for is that I was taught by a long-time Fellow of the Instuitute of Engineering and Technology (IeT) is about university choices: many students choose places like Cambridge or Oxford or ICL, etc... but people need to understand that there is no differnece in the course they teach! There may be small differneces, but with a subject like medicine, they have to meet a certain level of detail and a minimum teaching facilities requirement to achieve accreditation. Don't choose your course based on the university like so many do! Make sure you check that the universities you are applying to are accredited! With that being said, KCL is a great school and it is a great idea! Hope this helps, best of luck! 😁

Sorry for the late reply I just logged back in. Thank you so much for the advice! I defiantly have a look around, mainly aiming for London since home is then just a train ride away. I will certainly keep your advice in mind, thank you for taking the time to help me!

Hello! Sorry I just logged back in, Easter Holiday means lots of papers and advice. 😅. Your words are really kind, and yes consistency is better than nothing, panic still has not settled in but I am pushing through. Bioethics is something I find really interesting, such as recently we have been able to alter someone's DNA by a drug to help provide healthy red blood cells for those with sticky cell anaemia. I will definitely reach out once GCSE season is over, right now I am averaging on a 7 and 8 for everything so I just need those extra marks. Thank you for taking time for your reply and hopefully we can talk again soon!

No need to apologise—I'm so glad you came back, and it sounds like you're handling things with such a good mindset, even if the panic is trying to creep in a little 😅 You're absolutely right: consistency over intensity is the way forward, and it’s AMAZING that you’re still pushing through during Easter!!!

Also, bioethics?? That’s such a cool interest, and it totally makes sense why that example about gene-editing for sickle cell anaemia stuck with you. You clearly have that curiosity that makes a strong student—and that kind of interest can take you in all sorts of exciting directions, whether that’s medicine, research, policy, or something entirely new!
Averaging 7s and 8s right now is a SUPER DUPERRR solid foundation. Those extra marks are TOTALLY within reach with a bit of strategic practice and focus—especially since you’re already reflecting and motivated. 💯

When GCSE season wraps up, deffo reach out—we can chat about general stuff/plans or even more bioethics-y stuff if you’re into it.

You've got this, best of luck!! Stay steady, keep showing up for yourself, and don't let that dream-panic win 😄
Catch you soon, future all-9s-grader! 💫

Hi Misha i am a sixth form student doing maths bio chem, first of all just keep working hard in your gcses, aim for top grades in biology and chem as well. Seconds of all, you should definitely pick biology and chem however maybe reconsider doing maths and an extra a level. Your university offer will only be for 3 a levels (they just wont take the 4th into account) also dont take maths unless you really really really enjoy it and you’re confident at gcse- i know lots of people who want to do medicine or dentistry who are really struggling with math’s because they dont enjoy it at all. You could consider bio chem psychology as your options? My older sister went to med school (and is a qualified doctor now) and did biology, geography, textiles so subject combo doesn’t matter as much as people think for medicine unless you want to apply for oxbridge then you need maths. Defo do an epq though!! Good luck and also feel free to ask more questions

Hello! thank you for your kind words and insight, I was actually compleplating taking 4, I believe that my passion for psychology and a want to do an essay based subject lead me to pick 4, though psychology is the one I would drop. Maths I absolutely adore, I am doing the algebra award this year, and the insight into A-level maths, also the paper is really fun. Now I just want to work hard on that final push towards exam season, then take a few weeks to really think things through though I will probably end up dropping psychology, (Essays are a love-hate relationship for me). However I will definitely reach out if i have any questions! Thank you!

Hey! Here are some tips to help I found help me before exams:

Firstly, I used the app Flora which really motivated me, its a great tool to use to motivate you and track your tasks!

Focus on the tough stuff first: Pick the subjects or topics you're struggling with the most and tackle those first. It’ll give you a confidence boost once you get them out of the way.

Do past exam papers: They’re a goldmine! You’ll get used to the format and find out what kind of questions come up often.

Active recall > passive reading: Instead of just reading notes, quiz yourself. Try to recall the info from memory it helps lock it in way better. Plus this is way more fun!

Study with friends: If you can, get together with classmates or friends. Explaining things to others helps reinforce your own understanding.

Ask for help if you’re stuck: Don’t be afraid to ask your teachers or tutors for clarification. Most universities (like Bournemouth Uni!) offer extra support, whether it’s workshops, office hours, or online resources.

Stay organized: Keep your notes tidy and create a study plan. It’ll help you stay on track and avoid last-minute panic.

Look after yourself: Sleep, eat well, and take breaks. If you’re well-rested, your brain will work way better. Don’t burn yourself out!

Stay positive: It’s all about mindset. Take things one step at a time, and celebrate the small wins
.
You’ve got this! And hey, if you're ever thinking about uni down the line, Bournemouth University has a ton of great support systems in place to help students succeed just saying! 🤭
Good luck, and go smash those exams!

Hello everyone! Sorry for not being able to respond for a while; my post was under review, which made me unable to reply despite my many attempts. However, now I am back 🥳. Unfortunately, I did return just as the exam season started. But I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your unwavering support and honest advice. I would also like to say I have completed 5 of my exams so far: Spanish speaking, algebra award, maths, biology and geography. I would like to tell you each one of those papers was an absolute blessing, and I hope all of my exams go this easily 🤞. But I will probably update again in June after my exams and again in August. Thank you, Misha ❤️
