What structure to use for 'to what extent' questions in AQA A-Level History Paper 1?

For example, "To what extent was there a crisis of government in the years 1547 to 1571?"
I'm still slightly confused on the structure to use for these types of questions because I haven't found anything online for these specific types of questions.

You have to say whether to a large or small extent there was a crisis of government.
Your line of argument (to a large or small extent) should be consistent throughout, so if you’re arguing to a large extent that should be the same throughout your intro, three paragraphs and conclusion.

In your intro you should end it with “This essay will argue to a large there was a crisis”.
In each of your three paragraphs there should be your regular counterpoint first and then your main point saying why it was to a large extent.
In your conclusion it should end with “To conclude (etc overview of your paragraphs) therefore it is clear that to a large extent there was a crisis of government.

EG: if doing a paragraph on rebellions

it can be said that the government was able to retain control when rebellions and challenges to authority occurred

This is shown with (evidence, eg Wyatt’s rebellion)

Shows how government was able retain control and crisis to an extent, as they were able to control and effectively put down the challenges to authority

However, it is clear that government was in crisis to a large extent as there was significant instability and the government was not in control, with rebellions occurring

This is shown with (eg western and Kett’s rebellions and the Northern Rebellion)

This shows how there was a crisis of government as major instability and not controlling uprisings and the population, also weakness of government with not understanding regional differences

Overall, there is a crisis of government to a large extent, as while the government retained control, still significant rebellions occurred which challenged the authority and jurisdiction of the government across England.

Also-

also to make sure that you can be in a L4/5 in the comment and balance section (and not L2) make sure that you don’t say “It could be argued that the government was not crisis, however it can be said that the government was in crisis”

But instead say something like “Whilst the government can be said to not have been in total crisis, to a large extent the govt was in crisis” etc

This is it’s about making sure it’s a balanced argument, not a balanced description (this is from the exam board on how to write balanced)

Hope this helps!

A "To what extent" questions is just another regular opinion question with odd wording. You'd typically give your opinion (partial, minor, extreme extent etc.) on the questions statement and then you'd go into your writing.
For these questions I do a simple Yes/No structure:

Intro - Judgement, use the wording of the question

1st Paragraph - Yes, agree with the question/statement, write like a regular paragraph (some version of the PEEL structure)

2nd Paragraph - No, Disagree with the question/statement

Conclusion - matching judgement w/ some reference to what you wrote in the essay, make sure you've actually answered what the questions asked

There are other ways but I feel this is the easiest way to achieve a balance argument and achieve a sustained judgement, I would 100% recommend going to your teacher though as everyone teaches differently
