Primary education BA hons- personal statement

I’ve got to write a personal statement for my primary education degree however i don’t have the professional work experience in a classroom. Is it okay if i talk about my experience with children from babysitting and tutoring them etc, and how i’m passionate to teach and change the lives of children. Has anyone got any tips on what I could include?

Many thanks!

Of course it is. Just add more piazza words in like for the skills you demonstrate when babysitting and stuff.

Hi, Not having experience in the classroom at your age is normal. Read about why you should be a teacher here to give you some ideas and talk about what would make you a good teacher by talking about transferrable skills that you have (through babysitting, and contact with young people but also through your hard work in school and skills such as communication, empathy, organisational and planning skills; self-manager etc).Good luck! Hi Aminah,

I applied for the same degree and I'm currently in my second year of Primary Education Studies at LJMU. When I was in the process of applying and writing my personal statement I had only a small amount of experience working with children, and certainly no paid experience! Universities understand that it is hard to gain experience working with children before you apply for the course, as most applicant are quiet young and still in education themselves. The fact you have experience with children from babysitting and tutoring is amazing! Talking about this will help you stand out and show you are passionate about supporting children and young people. Its important to remember the personal statement isn't a CV, its not all about work experience. The university wants to know why you are passionate about the subject and what transferable skills you have that will help you succeed on the course. These skills can be from work experience, volunteering, school/college and your general life experiences.

I hope this helps and best of luck on your university journey!

Thanks Tilly! I’ll be sure to include those skills and talk about babysitting and tutoring. How are you finding your degree so far?

Hi Aminah,

I’ve just come off placement and it was honestly amazing. It’s so eye opening and gives you such a great feel for what teaching will be like post_graduation. I’m currently doing a discovery internship through Liverpool Johns Moores, working in a primary school alongside my studies and I love it so much! I think primary teaching is such a great path to go down; it’s can be hard work but it’s so rewarding. I wish you the best of luck with your interview!
