Costume design degree

I have got places at both Falmouth and Wimbledon (ual) for costume design (still waiting on Edinburgh) and I have no idea which one to go to since wimbeldon has great industry links and is very highly respected but Falmouth works very closely with film students and is in a smaller place as well as being much more affordable.

Is anyone else doing costume or has done a degree in costume and has any advice?

AUB got the queen’s anniversary award for costume, has links with industry and is more affordable. It’s by far the best place in the uk for costume courses.

Personally I’m not interested in AUB as they separate costume design and making and I want to do a bit of both, I have already got an unconditional offer for that uni but I’m not interested. UAL seems much more highly acclaimed and well respected and it’s much harder to get into as well as Edinburgh but I’m worried about the cost and accommodation. Falmouth is a lovely place but the work doesn’t inspire me as much as the other universities so I’m really stuck😭

I recently went to UAL's course tour and generally felt their course was quite contemporary/fine art orientated. The class sizes seemed to be quite large with not as much individual support ( two 1-1 5 minute meetings a week) but thats just what I gathered from the tour. I believe UALs course specialises in second year into interpretation or design. Other thing I gathered with UAL is the closest accom is about a 15 minute walk + 30 minute tube journey which is also a consideration.

Congratulations - you've nabbed some great offers! UAL is fantastic programme, too. Speaking for Falmouth you're right; our Costume Design course is tied into live student productions, so students work together on film sets and theatre productions. You're encouraged to apply your own style to live briefs, like you would when out in industry: it's all about finding your niche.

Another thing to consider is that your choices are very different student lifestyles; Edinburgh is a beautiful city, UAL Wimbledon has great transport links and Falmouth is pretty much unique in terms of location. We have beaches, cliffs, a castle and a lot of green space on our campuses. The town is welcoming, and always has something going on. You always bump into someone you know!

I hope that's helpful, but if you'd like to speak to a current student on the Costume Design course you can also chat with Natalie or Evie through Unibuddy on our website They're very friendly, and happy to answer any nitty gritty questions about the course. 🙂

Good luck with your choice!

- Holly, Falmouth rep.
