Imperial College London theoretical physics offer

Hello!

I just received an offer from Imperial College London, and it was a conditional offer. They've said I need 3 A*'s, and realistically, I don't think I will get 3 A*s, so why did they raise this offer so high?

What are you predicted to get? Surely it can't be far from A*A*A*, otherwise you wouldn't have received an offer.

My predicted grads are A*A*AA

Thanks. You're aware, I assume, that the typical offer for this course is A*A*A or A*A*A* (source) - so their requirements aren't completely unexpected. In other words they didn't "raise this offer so high" - it's a typical offer.

What I suspect Imperial are doing is giving themselves some wiggle room. By specifying an A*A*A* requirement, they're giving themselves some flexibility if you achieve your predicted A*A*AA grades. As you won't have met the requirements, they won't be obliged to confirm your place, and if they're struggling for space (because too many offer-holders have met their offer grades) then they won't. However, it's possible that they'd confirm your place if you achieved A*A*AA - but that's not guaranteed.

According to the status on this UCAS page, in recent years Imperial have confirmed the place 78% of Physics with Theoretical Physics offer-holders who achieved A*A*A on results day.

Unfortunately, we don't know how many of those offer-holders (if any) received an A*A*A* offer.

Some people received an offer for A*A*A, which was the offer I was expecting to get, but I guess not.
