What do you wish you brought to uni?

Hi! I'm planning to go to uni in the next academic year and stay in accommodation on campus! What are some things that you realised after a few months of being settled in that you'd wished you'd thought of earlier to bring that now you can't live without. Could be clothes, tech, stationary or anything!
Thanks!

There are 2 thisngs that come to mind for me. The first is a pair of slippers. My university flat had no carpet so slippers were really useful when walking around to avaoid my socks picking up dust from the floor. The second thing I found really beneficial was a food thermos. Being able to take warm food with me to campus meant I wasn't stuck with sanwiches for lunches and was reealy helpful when I was going strait from lectures to society events in the evenings. The thermos also encouraged me to do more meal prep which freed up time during the week.

Hope this helps

Hellooo!

Great to hear you're planning on coming to uni 🙂

My top three suggestions by far would be:

1.

A keepy cup - many cafes offer you a discount if you have a keepy cup and some places you can't even buy drinks to go in paper cups anymore!

2.

(Similar to above) - a Thermos flask - to bring coffee or peppermint green tea to lectures, which I'm sure you'll appreciate on a cold day

3.

A physical folder - such as an old-style ringbinder or lever arch - I found making handwritten revision notes and storing them by module very helpful. Plus, research has shown that handwritten notes improves retention over and above typed notes!

As an aside, if you're thinking of coming to Bath then for a bit of fun, why not bring a pack of porridge oats to give to our large community of mallard ducks who can so often be seen roving around the lake and campus?

Hoping this helps and best of luck!

bicycle, it opened up so much local stuff to me that was beyond walk or bus

radio, maybe a bit old fashioned but sometimes it was just nice to put Radio 4 or Radio 2 on in the background

Honestly, I always tend to forget the fun stuff, like things I use for hobbies or room decoration! It might seem like its not that important - but I'm always gutted when I forget it haha. I think comfort at uni, especially when you're living away from home, is really important! Feeling like I'm at home, or being able to wind down with something I enjoy is quite important to me

Hi Anon,
Here's a few ideas that I wish i'd brought to university sooner.

Crocs/sliders for the communal areas

Anything related to hobbies you want to continue at university eg. craft/baking supplies or sports equipment

If your going to share a bathroom, i would recommend a shower caddy to hold all of your toiletries

Over the door hangers to hold your coats

Things to decorate your room with, might be posters or pictures as most rooms come with a pin board

Travel mug to take hot drinks to university

Hope this helps!

Hey there!

My name is Siobhan and I'm a third-year student at the University of Central Lancashire. This is a great question! I've been in uni halls for three years now and here's a few things I would recommend bringing with you:

Sliders/slippers - I remember in the first year I would just walk around my accommodation in socks and ended up with so much washing! I now use my crocs, and it is so much better so I would definitely recommend this.

Hobbies For those days where you don’t feel like going outside, have something that you can use to relax and pass time with. For me, it was my guitar which I left at home to start with and then missed so much, so I brought it with me after Christmas break.

Shopping bags Make sure you have at least one sturdy shopping bag to carry heavy items such as washing up liquid, cans, fruit, veg etc. Buying bags every time you go to a shop does add up quickly!

Laundry basket It isn’t essential but in year 1 I had to use shopping bags as i didn’t have one. In second year having a designated laundry basket helped a lot with storage and carrying more clothes to and from the laundromat.

Extension cord - You don’t realise how many things you need to plug in until you get to uni, and some accommodations don’t have that many sockets in the walls.

Things to remind me of home Pictures and teddies really helped me settle in better and feel relaxed when coming back to my bedroom. It also helped a lot with home sickness.

Double duvet - not essential but this made my room so much cosier, even though my bed was a single bed in first year I would deffo recommend this for winter as you can snuggle up and get warmer all wrapped up in a double duvet.

Hope this helps and please let me know if I can help with anything else 🙂

A kettle and UTC milk, then you can have a cup of tea without having to leave your room

Hi there,

Great question! I'm now in my final year, and have found that I forget/wish I had something each time I move. Here are my top items:

A clothes airer - I had this in second year, and it was a game changer. We all know or have heard about how expensive laundry can be, so saving on drying costs really helped me out when I had the space for it.

Good-quality bedding - I'm surprised I don't see this talked about more often! I recently upgraded my old, worn-out pillows for new ones, and the difference it has made is crazy. A mattress-topper is essential too, although they can be pricier. There's nothing better than getting cozy and having good-quality bedding to help you get better sleep.

Not so much something to bring, but create an organizational system for your notes - especially in advance, so you aren't scrambling and wasting time trying to piece things together. I know some who use Notion, whereas I just simply organize my files in file explorer. Whatever works for you, whether that be digitally or not, stick to it early and save yourself some stress!

Despite trying to be prepared, there will be things you forget - it happens to everyone! Remember that you can always purchase things once you get there, and focus on settling in and having a good time too! 🙂

I hope this helps,
