Hi. I have an offer to study as a postgrad. I’ve noticed that the accommodation options have changed this year (Alcuin has been taken off the list). I was just wondering why and also if you know how many we have to choose and if we have to choose the shared bathroom as one of the options. Thank you

Hi, I was under the impression that most ug accomodation options would only go up by about 9% in price for 25/26. I've seen David Kato and Anne Lister among a few others have gone up by almost £50 a week. Is there a reason for this?

Is there any reason it seems many “budget” options have been fully removed? It also seems like the band system has been scrapped. Band 2 David Kato and Anne Lister seem to have been removed entirely with only the Band 3-4 of those colleges remaining. Does this mean people will be paying 8.8k for the same accommodation that was 6.9k the previous academic year? I understand the economic issues facing Universities at the moment, especially at York, but I was expecting them to go from 6.9k to something like 7.5k but now with them being 8.8k I don’t think it’s feasible for most students.

Hi!

Accommodation options for both undergraduate and postgraduate students can vary from year to year. Alcuin College was available for postgraduates in the 2024/25 academic year but will not be offered to postgraduates for the 2025/26 academic year. However, we still have a variety of rent options and room types available to support postgraduate students’ preferences for the 2025/26 academic year. Postgraduate-taught students are now required to list only their top four preferences when applying for accommodation. There is no minimum number of shared bathroom preferences that postgraduate-taught students must include in their application. See our How to apply for postgraduate accommodation web page to learn more about the application process.

Hi,

Rents for the 2025/26 academic year have increased by an average of 6%. The decision to increase rents has not been made lightly, and was reached after careful consideration of factors including rising operational costs, market analysis and the need to maintain and improve the quality of our accommodation.

Rooms in Anne Lister College and David Kato College have increased by £12 for an ensuite room (formerly Band 3), and £12 for a deluxe ensuite room (formerly Band 4) for the 25/26 academic year. Our Anne Lister and David Kato College economy room options (formerly Band 2) are not available to new students in the 2025/26 academic year.

I hope this helps 🙂

Hi,

Rents have increased overall by an average of 6% for 25/26, however we are committed to continue offering a wide variety of room types and rent prices to support student preferences. Banding has been removed for the 2025/26 academic year to better reflect the quality of accommodation and to provide a more clear understanding of rents. Room banding has been too narrow for the number of accommodation options and quality available, and it is for this reason that it has been agreed with the University of York’s Student Union that it is removed. We hope that this change is a positive one, and rent prices reflect the age and quality of the accommodation, providing a differential between older and newer accommodation.

Rooms in Anne Lister College and David Kato College have increased by £12 per week for an ensuite room (formerly Band 3), and £12 per week for a deluxe ensuite room (formerly Band 4) for the 25/26 academic year. Our Anne Lister and David Kato College economy room options (formerly Band 2) are not available to new students in the 2025/26 academic year. We understand that the increase in all rents is not ideal, and this decision was made after careful consideration of factors including rising operational costs, market analysis and the need to maintain and improve the quality of our accommodation.

To support students facing financial challenges, we will continue to offer hardship funds, bursaries, and dedicated support for those struggling with accommodation costs. If you’d like to learn more about how rents are used, you can find a breakdown on the Where Your Rent Goes webpage.

Hi there,

Yes, undergraduate applicants to list at least seven accommodation preferences, unless you are a Nursing or Midwifery student as they only need to list a minimum of six.

I hope this helps - Hannah 😀

Hi, the website says a max of 4 en-suite can be selected, the rest to be shared bathroom. Does this only apply to Nursing or Midwife students. Or does it apply to all?

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're thinking of coming to York! 🎉

As far as I am aware, this rule applies to all accommodation applicants. It's because ensuite rooms are more popular, so we ask applicants to include some shared bathroom options as well.

I hope this helps! - Hannah 😀

Hi there,

Room offers are sent out via email from UK A-level results day (Thursday 14 August 2025) and will contain an offer of your room detailing the college, room type and let length. You will then get an email with your room number in September, and around the same time you'll get all the details from your college about moving-in dates and welcome events.

Please bear in mind that you might not be given your top choice of accommodation, so make sure that you would be happy and willing to live in any of the seven room choices you put down in your application.

I hope this helps! - Hannah 😄

Hi Hanna,
I’m attending the HYMS offer holder day on Sat 26th April. Will anyone from accommodation be present and will any accommodation be available to view.
I ask as I was interviewed at Hull and was not able to come to the open days as I live over 6 hours away. From what I see online York looks amazing and am very excited to see it in the flesh. 😁

Some of the accommodations still do not have photo and 360. It is still saying will be soon. Is this going to happen before the opening date?

Hello,

Photos are being uploaded today and 360s will definitely be live before the application opening date. (The only exception is ensuite Derwent College Quad - we have been unable to get images to date).

You can also chat with students on Unibuddy about what the different accomodation options are like.

Let us know if you have any more questions,

E.

When ranking your accommodation, can you choose two options from the same college e.g., Langwith shared as one option & Langwith ensuite as another/

Hello, if accommodation says 44 weeks, do I have to pay for the full 44 weeks or can I just pay for when I'm there. As I understand, 44 weeks covers the start of the summer holidays. If I went home before this, could I pay just for 40 weeks?
