:woo:

How are you feeling?

If you are taking any specific exams and want to make a thread to discuss them, let me know when you do and I will add it to the main list!

Hello all!

I'm in S5 sitting my Highers this year in the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Human Biology, Chemistry and Computing Science. My first exam is on the 25th of April (rip) and my last is something like the 27th of May.

I have a GYG thread if you're interested here. It should be a lot more active now that we're coming up to and entering the exam diet.

I've also created a Higher English discussion thread here as it's my least favourite subject and the one I do the worst at so it's therefore also the one I'd like advice in. (@StrawberryDreams if you wouldn't mind adding it to the post I'd greatly appreciate it!)

Hi! Not sure which year you’re in so can’t give very specific advice but I got 100% on the Nat 5 prelim so maybe I can help?

I’d say the easiest thing to pick up marks on is the RUAE since it requires no actual knowledge, so make sure you know how to answer every type of prompt - make flashcards for every question type, and go through practice questions for each type individually (you should be able to find booklets online or on your class teams). Once you feel confident with each type, do past papers and ask either a teacher or ChatGPT to mark them (though if you do the latter, feed it the mark scheme and be wary). If you notice you regularly get one specific type wrong, ask a friend to explain how to do it

For the critical essay tbh I was quite lazy - my strategy was just to write and memorise a basic essay that could be adapted to any prompt. For example, for Macbeth, I memorised an essay on his downfall and the theme of ambition and random additional quotes. The prelim asked about a turning point, so I just wrote basically the same thing but changed my phrasing slightly, put more emphasis on certain scenes and chucked in a couple quotes about Banquo, betrayal, etc.

For SST, I did the poems of Edwin Morgan so I don’t know what it’s like to do a short story or play unfortunately. Something I found really helpful was making flashcards for different combinations of poems and themes/techniques then key quotes on the back (though make sure you know the context of it in the text). For the 8-marker, just practice using the CPR structure and writing under exam conditions. Give yourself a little less time than you would really have, just to get used to stringing your thoughts together quickly.

If my advice is entirely inapplicable to your circumstances (I have no idea how different higher or advanced higher English is from Nat 5) I apologise. Good luck with your exams! (Sorry for the amount of blabbing, i’m physically incapable of being concise)
