Advice needed on offers: MMU x Salford x Edge Hill

Hi everyone,

I’ve been offered places on the following courses:

MMU Business Technology
Salford University Business Technology
Edge Hill University Information Technology Management for Business (with a STEM year)
Considering factors such as rankings, accreditations, and reputations, which course would be the best option in terms of preparing me for the technology job market?

I’m a mature student seeking a career change. I hold a National BTEC Higher National Diploma in Computing. However, I have no professional experience as a developer, and my current role is unrelated to the IT field.

Thanks in advance.
Hey @Roddy the poor ,

I'd say its worth visiting all of us to see how you feel about the programmes - that way you can also see the facilities and have a chat with the academics who teach on these degrees, who'll be able to advise on routes after you graduate into your areas of interest within the business technology field. We have offer holder days over the next few months, so if you've received an offer for our programme you should have been invited to one of these!

Taking a look at the modules covered in each degree is also really key to finding a degree that suits you - have a look on each of our websites (you can find the link to your course here!) and see what we all teach, as you might find you have options at one university that you don't at another. We have a range of optional modules in our second and third years which allows you to customise your degree further, meaning you can choose areas to specialise your knowledge in. I found that really useful in my undergrad degree here, as it helped me focus in on areas I was passionate about!

I'd also consider a placement year if you're considering a business degree - we offer one between second and third year for all business courses. You can choose where you go into for this (e.g. subject area, role/position, differing countries if you'd like to work internationally!), as we're really keen on encouraging you to follow the routes that suit you. All of our Business placements are paid placements, and our placement teams help support you with finding placement options, with interview skills and application advice, so you're really well supported throughout the whole process. They also contribute to your final degree grade, so they're a really great addition to your studies!

Our degree is also dual accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) so its worth looking into what options for accreditations different degrees can offer you!

If you have any queries please let me know - happy to advise.
All the best in your decision making!

Hi @Roddy the poor

Firstly, congratulations on your offer to study Business Technology with us.

Our BSc (Hons) Business Technology degree does cover learning to code, understanding databases and working with cloud computing platforms, however the course is designed for those with no computing/coding knowledge or experience so don’t worry. How much coding you do depends on the option units you choose. We cover business tools, such as Python, PowerBi, SQL etc, to give a certain level of understanding, but the level of technicality is not the same as it would be on our Computer Science degree, for example.

This degree has an optional year-long industrial placement or students can choose to study overseas for their additional year, either of which is definitely worth considering if you’re able to. For example, students on this course have been able to secure placements with companies such as BUPA, Lloyds TSB and MBNA. You don't need to decide about that now, this is something you can arrange once enrolled on the course.

In terms of employability our triple accredited Business School has close industry ties and we regularly host networking events. Graduates from our Business Technology degree either go onto postgraduate study, or research. Others go on to enjoy careers in business analysis, project management, IT management, and web development. You can take a look at our Business School here.

If you haven’t yet visited our Business School and campus, I’d encourage you to come to our Offer Holder Visit Day next week as you’ll be able to meet with the tutors and current marketing students and get a real feel for the course as they run subject taster sessions. It’s the perfect opportunity to ask any specific questions you might have to make your decision about choosing your firm and insurance choices easier. If you've not yet had an invite to this event, please contact [email protected].

I hope the above helps and hopefully we will see you at our Visit Day next week!

Hi @Roddy the poor

Congratulations on your offers!

I agree with everyone else, I'd recommend visiting them all to help you work out which university is right for you.

I'd recommend coming along to one of our Offer Holder Days. During the event you will be able to attend a subject taster session which is an example lecture and will provide further insight into the course. Tutors will be available to answer any questions and you will be able to meet other students looking to study the programme in September. You can attend the student experience fair where you can speak to support teams such as the Careers Centre, Study Abroad and Student Life. Here you can find out about other opportunities outside your course. One of our current students Eloise, has shared more information about these events here. If you haven't been invited to one of these events, please do get in touch and we would be happy to book you on. Our email address is [email protected].

I would encourage you to have a look at the modules we offer on our course page to see whether they align with your interest and career goals. Our BSc (Hons) Information Technology Management for Business degree is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional. Students on the course currently have the opportunity to complete a work placement or a sandwich year placement, where they gain professional experience to help them find employment after their degree. Our Computer Science Department was ranked 1st in the North West and top ten in the UK for learning resources (National Student Survey 2024 - Computing).

You can also chat to some of our current students via our website here to find out more about the student experience.

I hope this helps, please do let me know if you have any further questions I can assist you with 😊
