Semester abroad in Canada

This year I will be applying to study abroad in semester 2 of my 3rd year. I am looking at the University of Toronto (or another Canadian university) but I need to provide explanation of how my credits from Canada will be converted when I return to the UK. Can anyone who's studied abroad in Canada explain the credits system and what the equivalent would be at the University of Glasgow? For example in my 3rd year at Glasgow I have to take 120 credits worth of classes (60 per semester) - the UofT website says their entire undergrad programme is worth 14 credits with no breakdown of how many credits are to be taken per semester/year. I think each class is worth 0.5 credits but I'm not sure how many I'd have to take if I'm only there for a semester, and if a 0.5 credit class would translate to say a 20 credit class at Glasgow.

Really hope this makes sense!!

Have you actually asked your university about this? Especially admissions or your personal tutor or the course leader for your course? They should be the ones who knows as they would more than likely have liason with the other universities on that program especially as every university on that program would have different credit system and would have many students from different universities all over the world coming for placements every year etc

Hi there,

From what I've been able to find, the standard full-time course load for one semester at UofT is 2.5 credits, with classes being 0.5 credits. I can't find any clear information for how this translates to UK credits directly. When I studied abroad in the US, I had to complete the year with at least 24 credits (equivalent to 120 UK credits). This consisted of mostly three credit classes, with some 1 credits.

It may not be accurate, but 1 Canadian credit may translate to 2 ECTS. 2 ECTS would generally be considered to be 4 UK credits.

I'd definitely contact your university to inquire more about this, as this is something you don't want to get wrong! They'll likely have better knowledge of how these things transfer, and will be able to help you figure out your specific placement.

I hope this helps,
