How strict is attendance at university? A perspective of student at City St George's

Hello, everyone! 😊

My name is Nally, and I am a second-year student in Media, Communications and Sociology at City St George’s, University of London. I will be sharing my experience with attendance policy at City, as well as in universities in general. While my experience comes from being a student at City, many other UK universities may have similar requirements.

Attendance at university is significantly important as it directly impacts your learning experience and opportunities. Consistent attendance provides better access to resources, such as direct interaction with professors, and helps you stay on top of your coursework.

For international students that require a Student Visa to study at university, attendance holds a greater importance due to visa requirements. The university has a legal responsibility to record attendance and report this to the Home Office. Since stricter attendance requirements are applied, failure to meet attendance expectations can jeopardize your visa status and ability to stay in the country.

At City St George’s, University of London, attendance is regularly monitored, especially for courses that rely heavily on in-person interaction and practical workshops. While some courses may have a more flexible approach, most programs require students to attend regularly to ensure students engage with the full learning experience. Check out your programme handbook for specific information about the requirements.

City regularly monitors and review student attendance and if your attendance is lower than expected, the school will get in touch to offer support. Most courses offer recorded lecturers or alternative resources to help you catch up if you miss a session. City provides a Personal Tutor system who could support you if you are finding it difficult to attend or engage with your course. Moreover, they will provide advice and guidance about academic aspects to make the most of university experience.

For those applying to university this year, how do you feel about balancing your attendance with other commitments, like part-time jobs or social activities?

I hope the information is useful. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or you can reach out to me in here: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7571272
