Further funding after an Undergraduate Degree

Hi,

It's a bit confusing but a few years back I attended university for Physiotherapy. I completed and passed my first year and the majority of my second year aside from one exam due to it being a practical exam and COVID happened so it was postponed. I then started my third year but after a couple months decided to take a year out due to family illness. I returned the next year but only stayed for a few months before deciding not to continue and to leave university as the course wasn't for me.

The university took the student finance for all four years but I only received credit for my first year of university so left with just a Certificate of Higher Education.

I recently decided that I want to go back to university to study Biology. I have started an OU course part time and completed and passed the first module and this has been funded by SFE. I have been thinking however that I would much rather attend university in person so was wondering whether if I decided to apply full time for a course in Biology (interested in Northumbria uni), would I receive finance to cover course costs?

Thanks!

Hi there. If you are looking to study a new full time course, your previous full time study will be taken into consideration.

Student Finance uses this calculation to work out how much funding you have left:

New course length + Additional Year Previous study years

For example, your new course is 3 years long, your calculation would be:

3 + 1 4 = 0 years entitlement

This means you won't have enough Tuition Fee funding to cover the course (Maintenance Loan and grants not affected).

If you could not complete your course year due to personal reasons, you may be able to receive an additional year of funding if you provide evidence of this. This evidence can be uploaded on your online account. The evidence depends on your personal circumstance. However based on your post you could only apply for 1 year back of Tuition Fee (the family illness year).

We don't take full time study into account for part time, so you could study a part time course in person.

Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah,

Thanks so much for your reply. So I could apply to study part time at university and I would receive funding for the full course from SFE?

Yes, you get a maximum of 16 years funding for part time. Thanks, Leah.
