Cambridge engineering

Hi im in yr 12 and am doing a levels in maths, physics and econ and jsut dropped chem as my fourth but now i’m not sure if this will affect my chances at getting an offer from cambridge. I would like to apply to their engineering course and specialise in aerospace engineering or electrical. i also know as i’m not doing further maths i might disadvantaged but am thinking of doing as level further maths outside of skl. would this help my application?

Yes, further maths will significantly help your Cambridge application, especially if your school offers it (they're more lenient if your school doesn't offer further maths)!

If your school doesn’t offer further maths then they tend to be understanding of this reality, in general I would encourage you to go to open days and explain your circumstances and ask the admissions tutors first hand, only they can really advise with how they would react (and look at the admissions data available). If your school offered further maths then i think you will be in a tougher situation & one thing to way up with privately sitting further maths is how would this impact your other A-levels…

There is an entrance exam for Cambridge and doing further maths would significantly help with this. Although the exam is not further maths content, doing further maths will get you practicing maths more. The exam is very time pressured so this would be a great benefit. Also in further maths, you may find there are slightly easier or quicker ways of doing things that are taught in maths, especially useful if the exam is non-calculator

Around 97% of successful Cambridge engineering applicants take Further Maths.

Really? I don't think that's true.

Yes it is - AMSP offer online teaching in England and the Welsh equivalent do this in Wales.

It's not expensive either.

Wow! So what does it do? Provide online teaching of further maths in schools that don't have teachers for it? Who pays for this service? Nevertheless, it remains true that not all schools do offer Further Maths, even if they could through this scheme.

This has existed for twenty year or so so all schools know about it - I regualrly promote it on here.

All schools in England and Wales can provide Further Maths A level is a correct statement.

Okay, I can agree then that it's a correct statement, but it wasn't a helpful reply to the person you replied to because they were discussing the possibility that OP's school didn't offer Further Maths, which could be the case (yes, yes, despite the fact that the school can offer it).

Yes but it's a lie to say that a state school in Engalnd and Wales cannot offer FMaths - unis know this and it won't look good.

Okay? The person you replied to didn't claim that the school couldn't offer maths. Seems like you just wanted an excuse to tell someone they are wrong when your information wasn't even relevant.

Of course it's relevant if the OP is planning to claim this or anyone else in a school in England or Wales.

I'm trying to avoid an application going in the bin because they have lied - surely that's the most helpful anyone can be?

If you start now you could catch up Year 12 by September and join the class at school. That would be my advice.

If it's Edexcel then Dr Frost has good resources here: https://www.drfrost.org/explorer.php?coid=12816

We can support - I teach this course.
