Architectural Technologist degrees exemption

I've done a 2 year foundation degree in 3D Visualisation and want to do an Architecture degree - a straight Architecture degree is exempt, but are the ones that specialises in Architectural Technology also exempt?

Would an BSc Architectural Technologist - like the one below - apply for an exemption?

Hi David, unfortunately we are unable to open links provided, can you advise the following:
The exact course title?
Is this a Full Time or Part Time course?
How many years is the course in total?
How many years of previous study do you have?
When are you planning to start your studies?
Thank you, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

The title is 'Architectural Technology BSc (Hons)' K130
It is a Full Time course, and is 3 years full time or 4 years full time (study abroad or work placement).
I have studied for 2 years prior in a Foundation degree in 3d visualisation.
I'm planning to start in Sept 2025.

I've been advised that for a non-exempt degree I would need to fund the first year tuition fees, which at ~£9,000 isn't possible. This is why I'm looking at 2nd degree courses that have exemption (full tuition and maintenance loans provided).

I'm aware that Architecture degrees are exempt - my query is whether an 'architectural technology' degree is also exempt.

thanks

Hi again, usually a student would not be entitled to further funding if they already hold an honours degree and wish to study another. However, students who already hold an equivalent level qualification can be eligible for maintenance support only (maintenance loan as well as supplementary grants and/or DSA where applicable) if they undertake an equivalent level qualification exception course. Students can be eligible if they start a new course leading to a qualification as an Architect (RIBA 1 and 2 studied as one continuous full time course), however there will be no tuition fees made available as previously advised. This is the exemption.

As you do not hold a previous honours degree, you would be assessed under the previous study calculation:

New course (in years): 3 years
+
Additional Year (for resits if required): 1 year
-
Previous Years Studied: 2 years
=
(3+1-2=) 2 years remaining entitlement for to study.

So this would allow for years 3 and 2 to be fully supported, however, year 1 your tuition fees would be blocked, but you may still be eligible for maintenance loan and supplementary grants (if applicable).

Thanks, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

Now I'm confused. I've spoken with a representative from your department who said that an Architecture degree (RIBA1+2) is on the exemption list and is therefore fully funded by SL England (Both maintenance and tuition fees) for all years.

Can you confirm whether this is wrong or right?

thanks

Hi David,

The course that you're thinking of study, Architectural Technology, is that going to be your RIBA Part 1?

Thanks, Graeme

I think I need to just simplify the question now.

I want to do an Architecture degree (riba part 1). I was funded for a previous Foundation degree 10 years ago - which was a 2 year course.

The degree is BSc(Hons)Architecture, Course code K100 and is a 3 year full-time course.

Can I get full-funding for both maintenance and tuition fees for this Architecture degree for all years?

Okay, the rules we have state that, for Riba Part 1 courses, we take your previous study is taken into account.

So, what Stephen said is correct: you'll get the Maintenance Loan for the duration. However, you won't be entitled to the Tuition Fee Loan in year 1 due to your previous study.

If for example, you plan on starting the course in September or thereabouts you can certainly make an application online and we'll be able to confirm your entitlement for sure: you can always cancel the application later.

Thanks, Graeme

Thanks for clearing that up.

As I can't afford tuition fees (£9,000+ is standard now per year), are there ANY full-time degree courses that I would have full entitlement for tuition / maintenance for all years? (given my prior 2 year student loan).

thanks
David

Hi there, the previous study rule would apply to all courses, (except exemption courses such as certain NHS courses or certain teaching courses). Thanks, Stephen.
