The Student Room Group

divorced parents and student finance

hi, i just applied for my 3rd year student finance, which will be my study abroad. for my previous years, i applied using my dad’s address, as it was my primary residence. until last year she lived overseas, and now has a place in the uk where she lives full time. this year i have applied using her address and saying i live with her the most as i will be able to get a higher maintenance loan. this is somewhat true, as i have stayed with her for much longer periods this academic year over the breaks.

my worry is will they think my application is fraudulent because i have nothing to link me to her address, e.g. bank account, passport, provisional drivers license, linked either to my student accommodation or my dad’s address. also, currently they support me with equal amounts of money, however for my 1st year she sent more (if that means anything).

Hi Aneya, if you want to change from one parent to another or if they have indicated the wrong parent on the application you can send a covering letter (typed signature is acceptable) confirming that you want to change the parent you have down as supporting the application, we would also require the parent to complete a PFF2 form: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/support-your-child-or-partners-student-finance-application-2025-to-2026
If the parent has a spouse/civil partner or partner they will also have to complete the PFF2. If the parent lives on their own they may be asked to send in evidence of their marital status. Thanks, Stephen.
