Who is liable for my student loan?

My parents refuse to give me their financial details to get more maintenance loan. I have been living in UK for about 6 years now, I came at 18 and now I’m 24. My relationship with parents has been somewhat distant, we’re not as close because they have different work schedules than me but we do talk from time to time. So I asked them for their financial details and they refused. Their reason is they believe they will be liable for the loan at the end of my studies. I don’t know if that’s true or not. Will they be liable for my student loan? Or if something happens to me or I lose my job, will the loan company ask them for money to pay? Also, my parents live in Bulgaria in my home country, In my country it’s mostly cash payments at work. So they are confused because they asked me what proof of payment if they just give them the money so what could be proof of employment if sfe is asking for tax year 22-23 but my parents have cash in hand jobs. How to prove they’re getting paid???

Hi there, the student is the one who is liable for the student loan as they are the one who sign the terms and conditions. Sponsors only provide financial information to allow an application to be fully means tested.
The income we would be requiring would be the same as within the UK:
Tax Return, P60, Month 12 Payslip with Total Paid to Date, Week 52/53 Payslip with Total Paid to Date, Letter from Employer or Accountant on Headed paper (these can be in Bulgarian equivalent). Thanks, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

If I do manage to convince them to give me their financial details, how long have I got to update my maintenance loan? Is there a deadline? My course started in November, so can I still put my parents details to get the maximum loan amount or is it too late?

Hi there, the deadline is 9 months from the start of the academic year (for a November start, this would be 01/09/24). The support can be submitted via their online accounts, or via the PFF2 24/25 form located here: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-forms/y
Once received this is currently taking an estimated 6 working days (PFF2), 5 working days (online submission). Thanks, Stephen.
