Gap year 2 or Graduate Medicine?

Hi all, I'm currently on my first gap year studying Chemisty A-Level from home in my gap year (I have achieved A* A* A A in my other a-levels including an A* in biology).

TLTR : Should I take a second gap year or study Biomedicine and try get into post-grad?

I applied for medicine and managed to get 4/4 interviews. However, I didn't perform particularly well in them despite trying all I could for preparation, although I can see where some improvements could be made, if I were to apply again.

I've currently been rejected from one, and waitlisted at another, and I understand that there is still a chance I get an offer from one of the other two (although it seems unlikely looking at previous threads for the unis I've applied too and the trends in offers etc) despite this I think it's important for me to think about what I should do if i were to be rejected from all 4 unis.

I have an unconditional to study biomedical science at Cardiff. Should I opt for this and try getting into post grad? I've been thinking that this is not a great idea because I'm not too good at interviews and it seems extremely competitive post-grad.

Any advice is welcomed , if you have any questions lmk.

I’m sorry to hear. Have you thought about the possibility of going abroad to study medicine as the competition is so high here currently

your a levels are so good, i honestly would say a second gap year is better than grad entry! especially bc a levels aren't valued at grad entry and that is really strong for you. there is no guarantee you could come out of biomedical science with a first/2:1 and that is also another 3 years of studying and waiting to apply. you mentioned understanding where you went wrong for interviews, so i think you'd be ready to reapply next year and potentially get your offers. not only that, but the funding for a med degree after a first degree gets really difficult, and as you mentioned the competition is crazy, i applied for grad entry this year (i'm in final year biomed) and almost everyone i spoke to that also applied was older with a lot more experience than me, either academic or life or work experience. but that isn't to say it's impossible, ive got 1 offer so far! so i think really weigh up your options and try to not see biomed at cardiff as a waiting period to apply to med again because it will be difficult and full on because it is a degree itself still!

Tysm for replying, seriously helps a lot . Congrats on getting an offer, that's amazing!!

I think the plan is to just do well in this chemistry a-level, and then try apply to a couple high % post-interview unis and maybe an aspirational choice (as long as my ucat aligns lol). I think I'm mainly struggling coming to terms with starting uni '2 years late'.

Best of luck with the medical degree : ) .

It seems your only problem is the interview, and as you said, there will also be an interview for post-grad.
However, it is even harder to get into post-grad medicine as there are so many more applicants.

If I were in your position (you could easily still get offers) I'd go again, smash the ucat because I wouldn't have to worry about school, consider getting some interview tutoring as it seems your weak point, then go in and smash the interview, then getting the offer I'm sure you deserve!

You could also maybe apply to some uni's that are less competitive, maybe have a look on the 'which medical school should I apply to?' forum to see which uni's care less about the interview.

Very best of luck!

I agree with you with applying to schools which the interview itself is less competitive, (bristol post int looks very nice!) just need to smash the ucat like you said and look into interview tutoring.

Remember with this current plan of a gap year you delay starting Medicine for 2 years from original plan whereas doing another degree you delay it for 4 years (1st gap year +standard degree length), so by this logic a gap year makes you twice as quick. The graduate entry route is also more expensive and more competitive so there is no guarantee you will get in first time after your degree and might be in the exact same situation in 4 years time with this route. From experience any degree is tough and much more so when you dont even have a specific interest in it, so dont assume you will breeze the biomed degree simply as you see it as a stepping stone.
