Accommodation at Sheffield Hallam

Hi guys,
First post on here,

I am currently studying A-Level Law, Economics, and Psychology at college and I have applied for Law at Sheffield (uni of), Hallam, St John, Becket, and Leeds (uni of)
I only got offers back from the non Russels of the above, my firm choice is going to be Hallam as I really vibe with Sheffield and live nearby (Doncaster), now my parents have come up with the idea of, instead of moving into student accoms for the duration of the degree, to instead purchase a flat in Sheffield that I can just live in instead. I (obviously) back this as its my own property which I will own following my degree, and I don't have to worry about flatmates,
The problem with this is that you cannot physically purchase a property within the timeframe of getting results and accepted to university and starting uni, so its likely I would be in halls for a month, give or take.
Speaking to others, and teachers, it also seems like this plan may restrict my socials slightly as I believe it's quite hard to find friends at uni initially. I have also used the SFE calculator and will only get £4900 maintenance loan.

Parents are pretty firm in this being a good idea, the finances on their part is not an issue but will be on my part.

(Both parents have never been to uni)

Any advice or help much appreciated

Cheers

Hi ItsgeorgeB,
It's great to hear that you are hoping to study Law with us from September.
With your accommodation, have you looked into which areas of Sheffield you would like to live in?
As you say, you would need to either commute from home while the purchase of the flat is going through or find a short term rental in the mean time. Most of our Halls only offer a full year rental agreement, however 1 or 2 of them do offer a single semester rental period which maybe beneficial for you, please reach out to the Accommodation Team at Contact us | Sheffield Hallam University to confirm which Halls are offering this for September. Going into Halls, even for a semester will help with building a friendship group and social scene before you potentially move into your own place. You could also look at studio flats within our Halls as well.
There are plenty of opportunities to socialise at Uni, from your course mates, societies, to chatting with people in the food courts. The Student Union also put on events every week which are a great way to meet people. You can follow their Instagram pages to see the kind of events they put on.
I hope this helps, it's a lovely thing your parents are doing.
See you in September!
