AS an postgraduate student, attending open days is great way to learn more about the Uni, the courses and they career opportunities that the Universities offer. You meet people, including those you might be attending classes with. I strongly recommed Open days particularly for undergraduate students.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to say how much I would recommend you visit University Open Days and Applicant Days. They are brilliant ways of finding out about the university course you are interested in, as well as vital information about the university itself - the facilities available, the support services that the university offers students, accommodation on offer, as well as the chance to look around the campus on a tour. Very often at Open Days and Applicant Days, you will be able to speak to current students and find out exactly what the university is like, from a student's point of view, which is often the really important part of the day. Usually a student ambassador will be on hand to show you around the university and answer any questions you have about student life, not just the academic aspects, but also the social and pastoral too. I think Open Days give you a sense of how well you feel you 'fit' into the university. Whilst on paper it may be brilliant and you really like the sound of the department or the layout of the university etc, once you are there you might feel differently. Therefore the Open Days give you the chance to gain a feel for the university. Sometimes you can be surprised that a university you weren't really sure of can be the one that you feel most comfortable at, and this is vital - if you aren't happy you won't do your studies justice and attain the best outcome you have the potential to reach. Open Days (and Applicant Days) give you the opportunity to look around the wider area around the university campus - you could venture into the nearest town/ city and investigate the amenities available to you.

Even if you have already visited the university for an Open Day, if you are offered a place, you will be able to attend again, but this time, on an Applicant Day. Whilst you might think that you've seen everything on offer at the university, the Applicant Day differs because it is specifically tailored to the needs of the Applicant who is going to be starting the university in the forthcoming year. Open Days are a bit more generalised and give a broader overview of the university, whereas the Applicant Day goes into more detail about specific things. Therefore, there will be talks designed to address the questions that are more relevant to students due to join soon. The days also give you a further opportunity to look around the campus, to meet the tutors who you will most probably be taught by. Generally, as with Open Days, the support staff will be on hand too, and therefore you can ask the questions that you really want the answers to which often helps to allay any concerns you have.

Cost can be a bit of a problem regarding Open Days - especially if you are travelling from a long way away and need to stay overnight. If this is an issue that might affect you, rather than immediately discount attending the Open Day or Applicant Day, make enquiries with the university's Open Day team - it may be possible to receive a travel allowance which would meet some if not all of the costs you accrue.

Open days and Applicant days are really good ways of finding out more about the university and I highly recommend them!
