The Student Room Group

Waiting for mental health services - did you wait, or pay for sessions yourself?

Has anyone actually used uni counselling or mental health support and found it helpful? Is it worth the wait? I’ve been on a waiting list for months and thinking about private options, but they all seem pretty expensive.

I did find a package for therapy and GP services for £60 per year - but seems too good to be true. They say unlimited online GP and 6 therapy appointments. It's posted as a student discount on Student Beans. Has anyone tried this or similar?

Thanks for your guidance.

Never had it personally but from what I've heard, uni counselling is of limited usefulness unless you just basically want to vent about minor issues/your daily life. Like the people I know who've had success with it were going about things like feeling lonely (despite having a group of close friends)/homesick, whereas people with actual legit issues rarely find much help from it. Obviously varies from uni to uni and counsellor to counsellor though.
