Irish Student Finance Help (migrant worker)

Im an Irish student studying in the Uk since Sept 2024. Applying for finances was a pain the entire summer as I was misinformed about my entitlement as an Irish Student in the UK. I soon found out I wasn’t entitled to Maintenance Loan but only tuition fees which was when I had already moved in and was settled into my course. I struggled to pay for my finances (rent, food , TRANSPORT) and got a job in December which definitely helped me financially but not so much academically bc i was working more than i was doing my uni work. Anyways long story short, I have been trying to apply for ANY financial help that I can get and was told that I could apply for the Migrant Worker Loan. However Im getting mixed messages from SLC , online it states that I am eligible but according to the man from SLC i spoke to yesterday I do not bc i do not have pre settled status however it never said this on the website. im confused and just want financial help.

Pls can any irish students living in the UK help? I need to know im not wasting my time again

Hey!

I moved to Liverpool from Ireland in September 2024 aswell, and found that I was getting so many different answers anytime I rang student finance.

Firstly, I'm quite certain that you do not need a pre-settlement status, because of the common travel area - so Irish people can live and study in the UK without the need for visas etc as you would know, but we also don't need to apply for the EU settlement scheme which people from other EU countries have to, so ring them up again!

I was told I had to apply to the NI student finance, then I was told I wasn't eligible, to then finally come to find out I was eligible for the student finance England loan, so it definitely depends who you're speaking to!

Hopefully that sorts it out for you! Just remind them that you're Irish and definitely do not require a pre-settlement status!

I hope you get sorted!
