GCSE Exam clashes

Hey all, so I do AQA Mandarin and OCR computer science on the same day as English lit. It’s 4 exam papers in total and Mandarin and Comsci clash. I was just wondering, what would typically happen in this case? I am aware that a certain number of hours in a day warrants doing one of the exams the following morning, I am on higher tier and have extra time so I don’t know if my extra time would count towards this?

Your extra time would likely count towards that (not 100% sure), but email your teachers ASAP and make sure you can sort it all out and I mean ASAP, so then this won't be a stress on a later part of the exam period

Your school will sort this and decide which order you do them. Speak to your exams officer.

I have an exam clash as well I have three exams on the 12th of June:

AQA Geography in the morning

AQA Level 2 Further Maths (NC) and Engineering (Cambridge Nationals) in the afternoon

This means I'll have around four hours of exams that day. In cases like this, the exam with the largest number of people at your school usually takes place first. For me, that will be Engineering.
After the first exam, I'll be placed in a seclusion room with no access to phones or devices for a supervised break. Once the break is over, I'll sit Further Maths.
Something similar will likely happen with your exams
Advice: Make sure you're well-rested and prepared for a long day!

In my school, and as far as I know, if students have clashes during their GCSEs, one of their exams will be scheduled to another day, preferrably the next day. During that time, parents have to sign a strict contract, meaning that children (who have clashes) cannot use their phones between the time the missed clash exam starts and when the pupil finishes the clash exam the next day. This is to prevent cheating by asking friends or looking up answers. Also, while in school the next day, they have to be accompanied by an external visitor, who remain with them the whole time, unless in toilets, as this prohibits asking for answers in the real world. That is just my school, but maybe your school follows a similar structure?

This is only true if the total length of three exams on one day exceed the limit.

'If a candidate is taking two or more exams timetabled in the same session and the combined time is more than three hours, you can move one of the exams to a different session within the same day.'

'Where a candidate is taking three or more exams timetabled on the same day and the total duration of those papers is more than six hours for AS and A Level exams or more than five and a half hours for GCSE exams, you can move an exam scheduled for the afternoon session to the following morning, even if that happens to be a Saturday.'

I think schools will have different policies on how to address this issue but if your not sure speak to your exam officer well in advance of the exam day to clarify any necessary details

That might depend on exam boards and schools. For my school, there are only 2 exams per day in the GCSE period. It would be impossible to fit 3, especially if there are 2 hour exams.

No, these are the rules from the official body - they apply to every school and every board. People could have a three subject clash in the two exam sessions.

I know. Sometimes there are 3 exams running concurrently and a student may take all 3. My school only allows for 2 exam sessions in 1 day. In each session, there can be upwards of 3 different exams that a student can take. There are also free periods.

Students may have to do three exams in two sessions - it depends on the total length of the exams - read the JCQ rules I posted. I did two exams in one morning.

Normally, you'll do the morning exam with the majority first, say English Lit, then you would be taken to a seclusion room to do the morning exam that you missed, say Computer Science. Then you would do the same thing for the afternoon exams.

Clashes are common - speak to your school if they haven't arranged for you to take the exams at different times.

i have a clash for comsci and english too but with classics, so for me since they all add up to exactly 5.5 hours, i have to stay behind and do the exam after school... add up your hours and check, if its more than 5.5 hours including extra time you can move it to the next day. Your exams officer should sort it our though
