What science degree should I take at Uni if I want to do Paediatry or Forensics ?

As the title says, I'm planning to go to university in 2026 but I'm not fully sure on what degree to take. I'm currently studying Biology, Chemistry, and Maths A-level and thinking of doing an EPQ in year 13.

I am quite interested in forensic science but I've heard that a forensic science degree Isn't that great of a choice and that its better to do something more broad, which is probably the better option for me anyway since I'm not 100% sure. I am also interested in doing paediatry.

The problem is that I don't know what science degree to take as there's so many options. Like biochemistry, biomedical, should I just take chemistry or biology alone? I do prefer chemistry and lab work over biology btw. Also would it be better to do a masters or just a bachelor degree?

Thanks for the help!

Good evening,

Choosing a univeristy course can be very difficult. When I was applying to university, I found it good to write down all of the aspects I required, e.g. a science-based degree, with a forensic module or specialism but has open career aspects. This will help you to narrow down what you want to study.

There are plenty of great options for a scientific degree, which could lead to forensics; however, if you wish to have a career in forensics or paediatry, you will be best studying these degrees, as they are tailored to the career pathways, and will increase your employability chances.

There are a few different options i can think of which may interest you:

BSc Biomedical Science ( slightly more broad, but will allow you to experience different aspects)

BSc Psychology (good for understanding behaviours behind forensics, but wouldn't qualify you for forensics)

I hope these will provide you with some inspiration. I highly recommend you have a look through these courses to see if there is anything you might like, as this will show you what you like and dislike about studying.

If you have any questions, please let us know, and I wish you luck with your search.

All the best,
Ella
