Accepted an offer for job starting in August. References(??)

Hi,

I currently work at my retail job (1year 8months) I’m 20 and have received an offer for an accountancy apprentice starting in August. The offer is conditional- subject to references.

I only really want to use references from my current role as a couple years ago I was sacked from a part time position.

I don’t want to ask my boss to be a reference as I feel like that’s a no-no. When should I ask? What should I do I’m kinda stressed. Do I keep my new employer waiting until I hand in my notice?

Discuss this with the apprenticeship team as they must realise this puts you in a tricky situation. I am sure they would accept that they cannot contact your current employer for references until you hand in your notice. Perhaps you have another reference you can use too, a professional family friend who can vouch for you personally and then get the work references when you leave. Good luck.

Agree with this. Maybe an academic reference from your former school?
