Difficulties getting 2 academic references!

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in the process of applying for a Master’s application, and I require 2 academic references for it.

My personal tutor has agreed to give me one, however, I’m having trouble finding someone to give me another. Ordinarily, I’d ask my dissertation supervisor for one, however, my tutor is also my supervisor, so that’s not an option.

I’ve gotten on well with a few lecturers, but not to the point where I know them well, so I’m stuck on who to ask for a second reference. I’d appreciate if anyone had some advice on who to ask!

Thanks!

Ask your tutor if they have any suggestions. They might be able to talk to one of your other lecturers.
An academic reference isn’t a life story or personal reference. They don’t need to know you well

Hey!

I was in the same position as yourself and used a reference from my dissertation supervisor, and felt like I didn't know the other lectures well enough to get another reference.

From my experience, regardless of how well you got to know them throughout your studies, they are always happy to give you a reference.

Is your dissertation supervisor relative to the masters degree you're applying for? For example, my dissertation supervisor was a lecturer in nutrition but I had applied for a masters in biomechanics, so don't think they have to be a lecturer in the field you're interested in applying for!

I chose to go for a lecturer who's module I done really well in, so make sure it's someone who has marked your exams/assignments because you're already on their radar and they'll be more than happy to give you a reference!

Hope that helps

Hi!

I really appreciate the response! My dissertation supervisor/tutor is definitely relative to the course I’m looking to do (Cancer Biology).

I’m going through my best 2 modules from this year and just asking some of those lecturers, and just hoping for the best. Even if it’s not the best reference, I think my tutors reference will be good enough for it to balance out.

Again, thank you so much for the reply!

Hey!

Yes, great idea!

It's really beneficial that your dissertations supervisor is relative to the Cancer Biology course. Reaching out to your best module lecturers is always a smart move—you never know who might be happy to support you! Even if one reference isn’t ideal, your tutor’s reference should help balance everything out, just like you said!

Wishing you the best with your applications! Hope it all goes well! 😊
