Tips for finding summer jobs and internships

Hi all,

Many of you may have started looking for summer jobs or work experience and the search can be quite a struggle. So, I thought I would share some tips on how I secured a summer job and internship last summer. Please feel free to add your tips below

Summer Job

When looking for a summer job there is of course all the usual websites to keep an eye on:

https://uk.indeed.com/
https://www.reed.co.uk/
https://uk.linkedin.com/
https://joinhandshake.co.uk/

Many big chains like supermarkets, retail and pubs are often looking for temporary summer staff.

However, I would also suggest keeping updated on local businesses Facebook, website and other social media, as that is where they usually post job advertisements.

Last year I started by making a big list of all the potential local businesses to keep an eye out on their website and social media’s. It is also always worth emailing or going in with your CV as there is nothing to lose.

Here is a general list of places I thought of that often get busy and need help in the summer months:

•Uniform shops
•Play centres
•Garden Centres
•Theme parks
•Water parks
•Wedding Venues
•Museums
•Cafes, pubs and restaurants that are near outdoor activities or walks.
•Campsites
•Festivals
•Outdoor activity centres
•Ice cream shops

Internships/work experience

For internships I would suggest the same looking at social media and writing a list of potential places near you. Again, reach out, reach out, reach out! You never know what opportunities might come your way. It is also always good to follow brands that you want to work for on social media, especially on LinkedIn. Don’t dismiss a google search often you will also find opportunities from different platforms that you can then also look at.

Volunteering is also something to consider as there is lots of good experience to be gained in these roles, so make sure to have a search for these too.

It is definitely a long process and expect there to lots of rejection, but you just have to keep going and applying don’t let it put you off! I kept a log of all the places I had applied and updated it with whether I got an interview etc, so I could keep track. I think it took me over 20 applications for part time summer jobs before I got one.

I hope this is useful and if you have any questions or anything to add, feel free to reply to this post 😊 I happy to share my experience and any more useful websites that you may need.

Also don't hesitate to add more advice below!
