LSE or Bath? (Mathematics with Economics / Mathematics Degree)

Have been offered places at LSE for Mathmatics with Economics and Bath for Mathematics. (Predicted A*A*A, TMUA 5.0).

Bath looks a lovely place to live for 3 years, requires highest grades, is far more affordable, lots of friends going there.

LSE, being in London, looks like it has so many more opportunities for the CV, has a very well recognised name, inc in health data ( a preferred career) - seems like an amazing opportunity that shouldn't be turned down.

Please help me decide - I can't yet quantify or qualify how much a university life in London is gain vs pain! Thanks.

Hi there,
Firstly, congratulations on your offers!

As I’m sure you’re aware, Bath has a great academic reputation for mathematics. A big advantage of the uni is it’s excellent links with employers. Many courses offer a placement year, giving students real-world experience before graduating. Sometimes, these placements lead to job offers for after graduation, securing students in jobs with top employers.

London offers incredible networking opportunities but can be intense and expensive. Living costs (rent, transport, social life) are significantly higher than in Bath. Many students in London also have to live further from campus, which can impact their student experience.

On the other hand, Bath offers a close-knit, supportive community, a beautiful and safe city, and a great student experience. If many of your friends are also coming here, that can make a big difference to your university experience.

Ultimately, it depends on where you think you’ll be happiest and most productive! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask

Good luck with your decision!
Lauren, University of Bath

Personally, I would go to LSE if I were you because LSE itself is a elite for networking and has very good reputation on the field you applied. And like you said it has so much more opportunities such as internship, more industries are located around london than Bath. They have much better university reputation My brother took a gap year to go to LSE even though he was offered a place at UCL because that was how much he wanted to go (but eventually they didn't offer him the place so he went to UCL). Its up to you but I think its also great for you to experience new place with new people. You can meet your friends who go to Bath sometimes because the distance from bath to London isnt far away. However, the one bad thing is LSE is in london. That means everything will be more expensive than Bath. But I would rather think of it as an investment for my future self and go to LSE.

Bath - a much nicer experience.

You'll waste a lot of time travelling to LSE and it's not a campus uni.

Definitely Bath! I'm at Bath and it's great and such a beautiful city , cheaper than London but still expensive compared to other cities! My neighbour's son choose LSE year before last and left after his first year and is now at Bristol (Economics) he said it was so impersonal and struggled to fit in due to the very high international cohort he has no regrets apart from starting at LSE in the beginning. Bath has really good placement opportunities and are well known for it.
