Refused childcare grant and PLA?

Hi,

Just a bit confused so need some advice really.
I was under the impression that the general guidance was that if you are not married, and under 25 with a baby, you are classed as independent.

This has proved true for my maintenance loan (I have received the maximum entitlement as I earn nothing in their eyes as a part time worker) - but has not proved true for the childcare grant and PLA.

I have received an email stating that i am not eligible because my daughter is financially dependent on my partner and not me. The child benefit is in my name so i’m unsure what grounds they can make this statement on.

Why is household income combined in this case, but not for the maintenance loan??
Childcare is so expensive, and even on my partners full time wage we wouldn’t be able to afford to send her!

Can someone advise please?

Hi there,

When you apply for grants the assessment team will determine from the evidence you have if your child is mostly dependent on yourself or your partner. So, based on what you've said this decision is correct, unfortunately.

It may be worth speaking to your university's Finance team to see if they can offer any help or advice.

Thanks, Graeme

I did speak to an advisor and it has been referred back to the dependants grants team.
He said he does not see any reason for me to have not been approved for the grants as my partner is not a student, we are not married, I am under 25 and I am a confirmed independent student. He said for this reason his income is not included in my household income.
Is this correct?

Hi there, if a student is under 25 and not married and apply for Grants For Dependents, the will be classed as an independent student from the start of the academic year. So under the independent review we would not take into consideration your partners income. As with the referral, this can take up to 10 working days for review, with an update after the review arriving usually 1 working day later. Thanks, Stephen.

Thanks,

What would happen for the remainder of this academic year with PLA and CCG?
My payments run Jan-Sep because of how my course originally started.
Would I be able to claim PLA and CCG for April and September’s payments for this academic year? My daughter was born in February.

I have uploaded her birth certificate and child benefit letter onto the already approved 24/25 application. This application originally was means tested on parental income, but I am now an independent student and do not live at home.

Hi there, this would be reviewed by the assessment team to check for any eligible periods of support under the referral. Once complete, you will receive further correspondence from the assessment team to advise. It is possible that funding could be pro rated, but again it would be best to await the outcome from the previous referral. Thanks, Stephen.
