Kicked out of Uni - what are my options

Hi,

I’ve recently been removed from my BSc accounting and finance course due to me failing an exam at the end of my second year. This was my second time sitting second year. I failed the resist exam in the summer and therefore I couldn’t progress onto third year. I have passed all other modules and exams.

What can I do going forward? Can I use the credits from all the modules in first and second year that I’ve achieved and passed and use it to transfer to a different university for advanced entry into third year?

What are my other options? Should I do an apprenticeship? It is very difficult to obtain one with limited vacancies. I’ve tried to look at other career pathways such as IT or engineering however I do not have the relevant A levels for it. I’m really upset by this whole situation and I have no idea where to go in life.

If you don't have 240 credits then you won't be able to transfer into 3rd year of a new course.

Because you've now got 3 years of previous study unfortunately you've used your SFE "gift year" of funding. Do you have any evidence of Compelling Personal Reasons leading to the failures? If not then you're options are going to be quite limited and likely expensive I'm afraid

If you still want to work in this area, then an Apprenticeship - but be realistic about having failed a Uni year twice - Finance and accounting apprenticeships | UCAS

Or just take some time out to think about what you want to do next, and why.

I think you probably need to not rush into the next step on whim, perhaps find a low skill job & do some volunteering. Spend a few months trying to identify skills, life passions & what activities you are happy to do day to day. Then identify some careers and the paths you need to get there… this will make it much easier to decide on next steps.

You are perhaps unaware of the high costs of obtaining an ATPL if not sponsored by an airline.

I am aware an ATPL is quite expensive but you can train with an airline my cousin for instance trained with BA so it’s not unheard of it was just an example there are many other roles in and outside of the tourism industry that pay well.

Obtaining a training contract with BA is very hard, so well done to your cousin. Many ATPL students self-fund.

Hi @Wally2018

I am really sorry to hear that. I hope you are doing okay?

Have you considered if it's worth appealing the decision? Most universities have an appeals procedure; if you aren't sure where to find it, you can usually contact your school and ask for it.

Were you enjoying your Accounting and Finance course? Is this still an area you'd like to pursue?

IT and engineering are great options; were they just university courses you looked at? If so, I'd recommend having a look at this website. You can take a quiz to find jobs that you might enjoy and that fit your skillset. Then, you can work backwards, as it were, and look at all the different routes to get there.

Prospects Quiz

As previously suggested, you could look at apprenticeships if you would like to earn while you learn.

gov.uk Apprenticeships

I know it is much easier said than done, but don't worry if you have failed an exam in the second year. It unfortunately happens, but it's okay if you don't know what course/career you wish to pursue. Most students don't know exactly what job they want to pursue for potentially the rest of their lives. If you really aren't sure what path is best for you, I would as others have recommended get some relevant work experience be that a paid job or voluntary work in areas/with companies you'd like to work with to give you a taste of these roles and help you decide if it is something you'dl like to pursue further or not something you'd enjoy doing long-term.

I didn't come to study at university until my thirties, because I didn't get the grades I needed at A-Level to study the course I wished to at university. Consequently, I spent a long time working to decide if I still wanted to attend university and if I did what I might wish to study. As I kept coming back to the Performing Arts, I finally decided to take the plunge much later in life. If I had rushed into something else when I was 18 years old just to attend a university, then I might not be studying what I am now, nor have so much work experience, and most importantly be really enjoying my course right now!

I hope that helps a little. Good luck with the next chapter!
