To be considered estranged, how does the process work out?

For example, my parents gave me their financial details for year 1. Year 2 they didn’t give me their details but I wasn’t aware of estrangement support from sfe and you can be classed as independent, so I got minimum amount. Now I’m almost done with year 3 but I really could use the maximum loan amount, as I’m struggling financially with a part time job. I’m not keep contact with my family for more than 1 years… so… did I need to not talk to family before start of course? Or I can become estranged later on, in my case year 3?

You can be classed as estranged partway through your course.
You need confirmation from someone who is a person of good standing (university staff, social worker, doctor etc) that you are irreconcilably estranged from your parents. There’s a form available on the gov.uk website that you can complete with that person and upload on your account.

Sorry, I’m not sure I understand the word partway. I tried to search on google and it’s giving me “to some extent”. I apologise but English is not my first language and sometimes I encounter situations where I don’t understand the meaning of the word.

So I can apply in year 3? Or did I need to be estranged before the start of the course?

And also I’m not uk citizen. I have settlement status been here for over five years but I’m not uk citizen, I’m from Italy? So can I still apply as estranged because my parents live in Italy I live here alone..

Hi there, do you have any contact with your parent at all? Are you still able to communicate them still? In order to be considered irreconcilably estranged from your parents you will not have had any written or verbal contact with either parent, usually for a period of at least 12 months, and this is unlikely to change. If you have had contact with your parent, or parents you can still apply. However, you would need to provide a full explanation of the nature of the contact, and this would then be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Estrangement Assessors who handle these exceptional cases. Thanks, Stephen.

Would I just need to upload evidence on my account?

Hi there,

You can upload this online in your account, under the evidence upload option. This link shows you how here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_JvzAlga4s

Anything you send put a covering letter explaining why you're sending it, along with your name and crn.

Thanks,
Claire
