Is This Cheating?

Basically, I already graduated uni, but for one of my assignments, I was discussing a topic with someone and they helped me find or suggested research for the essay, but I wrote and referenced my essay by myself. Would this be considered collusion?

I might not be the go-to for academic advice, but I’ll gladly share my thoughts! 😊 Since you wrote and referenced the essay entirely on your own, and the other person only helped by suggesting research or discussing the topic, this typically wouldn’t be considered collusion, collusion usually implies unauthorized collaboration or shared work. However, it’s always good to check your university’s specific guidelines to be safe, as policies can vary.

The person that helped me was a decade older than me and had never studied the subject as well. She watched me write parts of my essay, since she said I was bad at grammar and paragraphing.

Nobody would find out, even if it was considered collusion/cheating, because I graduated, regardless. I don't even remember what sources/research I used for the essay either, in fact I don't think I have access to the original essay that I wrote, but even if I did, I don't want to check at all.

Great question! 😊 Honestly, unless you outright tell someone or the person who helped you mentions it, it’s unlikely anyone would find out, especially since you did all the actual writing and referencing yourself. Universities usually flag collusion when they see identical phrasing, shared sources without proper credit, or suspiciously similar work between students. Since your essay is original and independently written, there’s no "paper trail" to raise red flags. That said, if your helper was a classmate and they later admit to assisting others, it could come up in a broader investigation (though still unlikely).
