Am I cooked chat (2/5 offers)

I have gotten two offers (Glasgow & Edinburgh) and two rejections (Oxford & Imperial). I am waiting for UCL, but won’t accept the offer even if I get one. Should I take a gap year to reapply to Oxford and Imperial?

I think that's the sort of life choice you need to make for yourself surely?

I must admit I'm always a bit confused when people apply to unis they have no intention of attending.

if you don't want to go to the two you have offers from, you can take a gap year and reapplying with the A levels you have. But that won't garantee an offer either. You will have to make sure that this time, you put down alternative you would be happy to go to.

You could just withdraw from UCL of course. If you really don't want the offer.

I would like to go to UCL, but its a lot more expensive and not worth it compared to Edinburgh

I know Glasgow and Edinburgh are alright, it's just that there are better unis out there

No guarantee you'll get an offer next year.

Not many, Scotland's good that way. (Edinburgh/SRUC grad)

Often Oxbridge will not consider people reapplying that they previously rejected. It’s worth checking on their admissions websites before you make the decision.

While there are “better” universities out there, it’s also worth thinking through why you didn’t apply to them this year, if you have a rejection from them this year why would they accept next year. Essentially what will be different.

You will have your grades by then, but some universities just compare them with predicted grades which can be unfair as predicted grades are often not achieved. Of course some universities don’t do that and value achieved grades.

You need to do some research. Taking what you have may be the best answer but it also may not. On the basis of your opening post I think you need to do a little more thinking on this.

1. Normally they do consider reapplicants
2. I think my personal statement was not as good as could’ve been this year, and I could’ve prepared more for my interview
3. Predicted grades are predicted, unlike achieved grades

I know there’s no guarantee but there’s zero chance if I don’t try. If I don’t get in again, it won’t be the end of the world.

😀I wouldn't take a gap year

Unless you can use your gap year wisely (working to save money to help fun uni / gaining valuable experience that makes you a better candidate for Oxford) don't take a gap year. Starting a Bachelors as a mature-r student is a disadvantage, not just to Oxford (they DO take into account the fact you had previously been rejected from the save level of degree, check their website and contact admissions office). So have a good think if you can use a gap year wisely, the cost of the course will increase over a year so you might screw yourself with higher costs too, inflation!! the longer you wait, the worse itll be.
