Optional Work Placement Year

Hello,
Advice please? When my son is applying for his student finance does he need to apply for four years or three as his degree/course is three years with an optional work placement year?
Thank you!
Confused mum here!

Hi there, as students make their applications every year for the next years support, students can start on the 3 year (or 4 year) course and make the change to the course on the application prior to the work placement year. (So student applies on 3 year application, gets to the year with the placement (usually years 3 or 4) and then submits that years application for the 4 year course, we assess it as normal and update the student, or student applies on 3 year course, does not require placement, so application proceeds into final year as normal on same course. Hope that helps, Stephen.

Thank you that’s helpful! We have now actually applied for the four year course and if my son doesn’t do the work placement year we will update the info when applying for his student finance…so essentially just gone about it slightly different but believe both ways will work?

Yes, that's completely fine - if this changes later then it's no problem.

Often, the university will tell us themselves and we'll update your son's application for him.

Thanks, Graeme
