Should I do Math A-Level?

Context: YR11, working grade 8, predicted 8, unsure whether to pick math or not. I enjoy the subject and I find it somewhat easy, so should I do it? I don't currently do further math

What other subjects are you doing? What do you plan to do after a levels? Do you enjoy maths?
I do a level maths so happy to answer any questions 🙂

Heyyyy - I take alevel maths and I’d say it’s worth taking  some topics r fairly challenging and it’s deffo a fairly big step up from GCSE, but given how well ur doing in GCSE maths I’m sure you could manage it  it’s also a very versatile alevel to have as it will be useful for anything you want to go into in the future

Yes it's worth taking it

Does my other A-Level subjects effect how well I'll do at A-Level Math? Also I like Math

Depends on the subjects you're taking. There are three parts of A-level maths: Pure maths, statistics, and mechanics. If you take A-level physics, you will most likely pick up mechanics really easily due to mechanics also being heavily involved in physics. As for other subjects other than further maths, a few of the other subjects that involve maths include: Biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, and a few others which include a small amount of maths. Taking these subjects may sharpen your maths skills but won't significantly improve your performance in A-level maths. If you're looking to support your ability in A-level maths, definitely have a think about taking physics, or potentially further maths.

It wont necessarily impact how well you’ll do but it might impact whether you should take it. One example would be if you were taking a subject like econ or physics and aspiring toward pursuing that in the future then maths would be needed.

Oh God no I don't think I would be a fan of Physics A-Level, but thanks for the advice! Would it be worthwhile to start teaching myself further math level 2 content?

Well, if you're yr11, I'm assuming you mean self teaching yourself after you've done your GCSEs. If you're looking to get a head start on A-level maths, during the summer, try and figure out the exam board of the specification your sixth form is following and potentially doing some light work on some of the things included. Your sixth form may also provide you with some transition work so there's no need to worry too much about learning further math level 2 content. The majority of yr12 maths is just going to be covering the harder topics you do now, so mainly straight line graphs, circles, regions, and a couple of other things. I wouldn't focus too much on learning further math level 2 because some of the content may not align with your A-level maths spec. For instance, matrices are included in further math 2 but do not come up within A-level maths.

Hey! I do Maths A level and it's defo worth it. Lots of STEM degrees require or prefer it and it teaches logical thinking as well. Content wise it's defo more interesting than GCSE and the concepts aren't bad. You don't need to love the subject to bits but you have to like it to an extent. With an 8 you're defo good enough so I'd recommend!
