Oxford non preferred alevels

Hoping to study PPE at oxford or LSE but have been recently informed one of my alevels ( media studies ) is non preferred . I also do Maths , Chemistry and an EPQ and predicted all A*s . Will Media prevent any success in my application ?

Yeah, ask them directly.
However, I had the same nervousness about my non-preferred subject for Cambridge, similar to you. I did Sociology. Turns out it didnt matter and I still got an interview(bombed the test though lol!) Look at the Oxford website it has a list of degrees with the recommended subjects underneath them. Eg) for Maths Bsc A-level Maths is required whilst further Maths can be under 'strongly recommended'

I think PPE doesn't require any particular A-levels but im pretty sure the eponymous subjects of PPE are all under 'recommended'

Pick a few Colleges you are interested in applying for. Email the Admissions team or Senior Tutor. Ask how they view Media as a 3rd A level for PPE when combined with Maths and Chemistry.

I don't believe sociology is a non- prefered subject? It is still an academic discipline where there is research being done and so on. Non preferred subjects are more those that are not considered academic enough by the university and this is mostly because they're not really disciplines which many people research- how many people have you heard of with PhDs in media studies? That doesn't mean the subject isn't challenging or something you shouldn't study but some reason these universities unfortunately see it that way.

Please please do email - for oxford it may be that different colleges have a different attitude to it and applying to the wrong one may be Immediate rejection. I may be wrong on this but I'm fairly convinced LSE will reject you because the non preferred subject is one of your 3 subjects, they do sometimes let it slide if it's one of 4. But please email admissions to check this. I know nothing about Oxford though, hopefully they have a less blunt attitude though. People on here can only advise you though, emailing will let you know for sure from the very people who would be assessing your application. You can then feel more confident applying. Good luck with it all!

Apologies I have communicated misinformation!
LSE says: "We expect applicants to offer at least two full A-levels or IBDP Higher Levels in these subjects (although typically, applicants will apply with three or four)". This means you can still apply and will be considered but you may be less competitive so make the rest of your application as strong as possible!

See if you can find Oxford's attitude to the same but also still email them

You are right.

Let me clarify for the person who originally posted.

Check the "facilitating" subject list. For top top top unis (Oxbridge?, ICL, LSE) you should pick at least 2 facilitating subjects.

Thank you ! I’ve emailed one college but will email a few to see if responses differ . Hoping as they’re less blunt than LSE on their website that they will have different attitudes .

"Providing that any specific subject requirements have been met, all A-levels are approved for admissions purposes, with the exception of:

General Studies - not accepted by any course

Critical Thinking and Thinking Skills - not accepted by Biomedical Sciences or Medicine

Global Perspectives and Research - not accepted by any course."

The concept of facilitating subjects no longer exists - look at each uni's requirements.
