Higher English Personal Reflective(Broadly creative) folio. AI and/or plagiarism.

Hello everyone,
There is a candidate I know is really anxious and stressed out about using AI for their Personal reflective Higher English folio. I want to know that if the candidate has used AI and the Centre thinks that they have plagiarised in their folio and send a report or whatever to let the SQA know, does the SQA always go in favour with the centre and straight-away award the candidate 0 marks? But the main point is that the candidate used a lot of personal and authentic experiences which I very very highly doubt AI would be able to replicate. But the candidate is still worried about being caught as they admit to using AI.
Any advice is appreciated.

Depends what the candidate used the ai for, did the candidate use it to fix her grammar or structure of the essay or did the candidate gave idea to the ai and they ai wrote the essay for them

Why did they do this? Genuinely, it's insanely stupid to me for them to knowingly use AI while, I'm guessing, knowing it is not allowed and hand it in then get freaked out about losing their marks. They brought this upon themselves. The marks that they lose, if they lose them, are their own fault.

Regardless, to answer your question, it will most likely depend on the degree of AI usage like Molly has said. The more AI written pieces in their work, the larger the penalty they'll get. Usage of AI counts as plagiarism and the SQA gives centres explicit instructions and guidance on how to file reports about plagiarism. The reports will be reviewed by specific, high-up-ish people in the SQA who are very skilled in quality assurance. It is they who decide what the candidate's final penalty will be.

Not only have they done this, but they have also made a false declaration on the front of their fly leaf, as they have claimed that it was all their own work….

You reap what you sow. This was within their control. No sympathy. Cheaters get what they deserve.

Bro sybau with this you reap what you sow🤓🤓 they will most likely be fine if it wasn’t that bad
I would be questioning the worth of your whole education if you don’t understand the meaning of that phrase

I hope they won’t be fine, they deserve all their grades being stripped from them I believe as it completely undermines the whole exam process for everyone
Folks, the thread starter deleted their account after posting. It’s not worth squabbling over or offering them further advice.

Can I ask how they even used AI? because I was under the impression that everyone was writing their first draft in class? or do you mean they used AI after the first draft?

Anyway, im pretty sure they would only raise suspicion if the second draft is vastly different to the first. But using AI for any essay, especially for a broadly creative, is a really bad idea as AI-generated essays often lack depth and personal meaning, producing work that feels overly structured and mechanical, rather than insightful. While they can produce grammatically correct essays, they lack emotional insight that come from genuine human experiences - so it makes the essay feel more robotic and impersonal.

Markers are experienced, and can spot when someone has used AI; hence why it’s just a terrible idea in the first place. I agree with another comment, it’s unfair to those who actually followed the exam rules to be able to get less marks than someone who used AI.

There’s nothing they can do about it now, just hope that they don’t get their full award taken away from them.

Most teachers dont actually care much about writing it in class - my teachers barely gave me time on the first draft so i wrote most of it at home and just pasted bits into a word doc every so often. they either used ai while writing first draft at home (maybe even in class, they do encourage use of ai in certain classes at my school for studying and stuff) or during final draft. if theyre that worried about it then id assume they had ai write most of it

Them cheating doesn’t affect anyone else but themselves so I don’t get why u care so much tbh

Yes it does, in the sense it completely diminishes everyone else’s hard work.
