Confusing GCSE Maths algebra question

If its the recurring decimal one, youre close but when you write
4x
that would be interpreted as 4*x. Really you want to write it as 40 + x as per the answer sheet which is obviously the same as 36 + x when you subtract 4.

I am not sure what you mean - how is 38 for example the same as 3*8

It isnt. 38 is an integer equal to 3*10 + 8.
4x
means 4 lots of x so 4*x. If you want to refer to digits so unit, tens, ... it would be better / unambiguous to write
40+x
rather than 4x or else clearly explain your notation. The question/mark scheme muddies the water somewhat though theyve used the digit representation consistently and as they note at the end
4x - 4 = 40 + x - 4 = 36 + x
