Can I apply to both maths and data science courses through ucas

If I want to apply to do data science at UCL and Warwick (as I prefer it to maths), but also want to apply to Cambridge maths (as they have no data science), can I put on the ucas form maths courses and data science courses (ie Cambridge maths, UCL data, Warwick data)? Or is this not allowed?
I've tried to find things explaining this but I've failed. I would appreciate advice

Yes! You can apply to ANY 5 courses of your choosing, however you can only write ONE UCAS personal statement that is sent to those 5 choices, if that makes sense?

Hi, applying for different courses in the same UCAS application is fine, as long as your personal statement is good for all of your chosen courses. For example, applying for natural sciences and biomedical engineering, which is what I did and got accepted for both courses at different universities. I don’t know a lot about data science but I think as long as you can write one good personal statement for both data science and maths, then it should be ok.

This is just what I think based on my experiences so take it with a pinch of salt xD Maybe wait for other responses too or even ask ChatGPT for advice. Good luck with your applications:smile:

Hiya,
I believe so, you can apply to any 5 courses on UCAS, but you can only have one personal statement. Maths and data science do intertwine, i,e data sciences explores what you can do with data and is more programming reliant, but with any compsci / datasci course it revolves on a lot of maths! I know a lot of my friends who study maths end up doing R in programming or something, you can mention an interest in programming and make it maths related, i.e graph theory or you coded a calculator etc etc into your statement. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine and it'll look like you're broadening your fields. Data science maths is more stats based though in my opinion.

I’m in my second year, entering third studying data science for context.
I’d recommend checking out numpy libraries.

Best of luck with your studies,

If you got offers from all 3 which would you choose?

probably Cambridge right? but it's a shame they only have traditional, pure subjects like maths or compsci, not datasci which combines them with statistics

Thank you very much for clearing that up! There really should be some kind of clear information like that out there. I will check out NumPy, thank you again!

For Cambridge you can apply with a data science PS and then talk about maths in your SAQ (or whatever it’s called now) additional statement.

I wouldn’t recommend diluting your data science PS with too much maths content in this case.

If a non-Cambridge maths degree was your top choice then this would be different.
