Do I have a chance at an offer?

Higher maths

Currently in s5 studying higher biology, chemistry, business,English and pe
And in s6 I plan to take higher maths, advanced chemistry, and higher accounting. I want to study finance and maths at Glasgow but I’m unsure if I am likely to get a conditional as I’m sitting higher maths in s6 whereas a lot of other applicants will have already completed maths in s5 and potentially be sitting advanced higher

Scottish unis care more about higher maths than advanced higher.

Its recommended to take it but not a necessity, however you wont be able to say the same about higher maths.

Don’t worry about it, and try your best in S6 to get an A in higher maths.

If you get an offer it will almost definitely be a conditional dependent on Higher Maths. Higher Maths is a required subject so they will require you to pass it. They may be surprised that someone wishing to study maths at uni didn’t study it in S5 but people do change their mind about subjects so that wouldn’t necessarily be an issue so long as you can show your interest now in your PS.

What sort of stuff could I do for my personal statement to show interest

Read books about maths and do extra maths learning outside of the curriculum. Books you could read include Mapmatics by Paulina Rowinska.

You could even try some maths competitions or olympiads - age category wise, you could enter the UKMT senior competitions.

You could (volunteer) tutor students in Nat 5 maths. Your school also might have a buddy system where older students help the younger students in maths - you could always take part in this if they do.

You could ask a maths teacher at your school if they could start up a maths club where you can learn maths outside of the curriculum.

If you want any more advice, feel free to ask. 😊

Hello @skibler23,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Priority will go to students who meet our entry requirements. If we have space on the course after we have reviewed all our applications, you may be considered however priority will go students who come close to our requirements. Please note that many of our courses are competitive and we may not be able to consider applicants with less than our minimum.

But assuming they did well in their Highers they will have achieved the minimum? The entry requirement page says higher maths but not that it is needed by S5?

Got my results back a few days ago and only managed to achieve 3A 2 b. With the As in biology business and pe and B in chemsitry and English.
Quite disappointed with how I done but I imagine I would still be considered as I still managed to get ok reaults
