Is this the right choice?

I am currently in s5 about to do my higher exams. I am predicted 5 A's (higher human bio, higher chem, higher computing, higher english, and nat 5 maths). I achieved 7 A's at nat 5. I really want to go into medicine but I don't meet the entry requirements for schools I'd like to go to. I have emailed them and asked and they have confirmed that an application from me won't be considered as I don't meet the cut. I have great work experience in the health care industry and I have some extracurriculars and have some roles within my school such as being a mentor in violence protection and a young STEM leader. Even after not meeting the entry requirements i still would really like to go into medicine and I am considering applying to med after I get a degree. I am saving up money if I do end up getting a second degree. I don't mind going into graduate entry med or applying after my degree with a 2:1 for undergrad med as I'm really determined. I believe I have good work experience and will probably get more in the future and grade wise I'm pretty strong. I want to know if im making the right decision.

If medicine is really what you want to do, this is a route that you could go down. You could also do a nursing degree or look into foundation year programmes.

Are there schools that you do meet the requirements for? If so, maybe worth widening your scope. I know some people don’t want to move far from home etc, but weigh up the cost of 2 degrees v being away for 5 years somewhere. And it isn’t really 5 years…..there are holidays 🤣

Hello, nursing is the best. I can help you with tips and revision materials to help you easily maneuver it.

Hello @Twilight_Angel2

From the sounds, you do seem very set on doing Medicine, and I'd advise you to push through with it if so! There are Foundation Year courses available that require different entry requirements to that of going straight into Medicine.

➡️ A Foundation Year is a really good way of spending a year getting to know what the degree will be like and polishing off on your science/math based skills. It's only a year and then you'll be ready for your degree in Medicine the year after. You can hear from some of our Medicine with Foundation year students on our website such as:
Harry, Medicine with Foundation Year
Students discuss their Medicine with Foundation Years

Our university offers a Foundation Year programme, and you can have a look at the entry requirements here. We are also a Top 10 school of Medicine in the UK 😉 and have really high student satisfaction levels, recently ranked 1st in subjects aligned to Medicine for ‘overall positivity’ in the NSS 2024. You'd be welcome to apply here and meet our team at any Open Days or Offer Holder Days coming up!

Hope that helps a bit 😊

I'm confused, your grades sound really good, why don't you meet the entry requirements?
