Green Spaces in and Around The City of Norwich

Hi Everyone! I'm Charlotte, a year 2 Graphic Design student here at Norwich University of the Arts and this is my whistle-stop-tour of some of my favourite green spaces to visit within our beautiful city of Norwich.

First up, we have The Plantation Gardens, my personal favourite, located just off of Earlham Road next to St John's Cathedral. This stunning grade ll, 3 acre garden is open to the public for just £2.00 per person and is a restored Victorian town garden just 600 yards from the city centre. In what is often referred to as 'Norwich's Secret Garden', you can find a gothic water fountain, colourful flower beds, lawns, a ‘Medieval’ terrace wall, woodland walkways and a 10 metre long Victorian-style greenhouse with a rustic wooden bridge (perfect for those who want to feel like they're about to make their iconic exit from 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!'. In the summer this garden plays host to a variety of events including open air cinema nights, live music and family shows, as well as Sunday afternoon homemade teas. This garden is so quiet and peaceful with a gentle water sound from the fountain, perfect for a few hours of reading or drawing!

Chapelfield Gardens is another option, this one being based right in the city centre and free to visit. This is a great location to meet up with friends for a picnic, do some work or even just go for a walk. The main feature is the band stand in the centre. This park also has a children's play area and various small food stands that offer coffee, snacks, and ice cream. Busier than The Plantation Gardens, but has a lovely community feel to it.

Another park to visit just a small bus ride from the centre is Eaton Park, located on South Park Avenue. Eaton Park is a free-to-visit, 80 acre, sporting and recreational park with a rose garden, a lily pond, a boating lake, a skate park, a crazy golf and putting green, a miniature railway and various other sporting facilities and is also host to many events throughout the year. This park is home to a variety of wild birds, flowers and hedgerows as well as meadows that provide them with food and homes. To the west of Eaton Park, is Bluebell Wood, an area of mainly mature oak woodland.

Other places worth mentioning that I haven't yet got around to visiting myself yet include Earlham Park, Waterloo Park, Wensum Park and Whitlingham Country Park - all of which look stunning. I hope that this has helped to provide a better insight into what Norwich has to offer, and I hope you have a great time exploring!
