Kicked Out, No Accommodation After July & Transferring to UCL – Need Advice

Hey everyone,

I’m currently a first-year pharmacy student at the University of Birmingham, but I’m in a difficult situation and could really use some advice.

I have an unconditional offer to study pharmacy at UCL this September and plan to fund my tuition myself without taking out a student loan( for religious reasons). However, my parents have kicked me out upon hearing my plan, and I currently have university accommodation until July—but after that, I have nowhere to stay.

My plan was to work full-time during a gap year to save up for tuition and living costs, then start at UCL in 2026. But now, I’m worried about where I’ll live after July and whether I can still make this plan work. I’m looking into Centrepoint and other housing charities, but I don’t know if they’ll support me while I’m studying full-time.

A few questions I’d appreciate advice on:
1. Has anyone been in a similar situation and found housing support while studying?
2. Are there any other charities, grants, or hardship funds that could help?
3. If I officially become estranged from my parents, would that help me get financial or housing support?
4. If I become officially estranged, is it possible to receive housing while I work to fund my degree

I’d really appreciate any advice or guidance—this is a tough spot, and I want to make sure I don’t end up homeless while trying to sort my future out.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried contacting your local council? They might be able to advise you regarding claiming homelessness/providing temporary accommodation in hotels etc.

There are housing associations that perhaps can help.

I am sorry to read situation, so stressful. Have you contacted housing departments for both universities? Would it be possible to stay in summer accommodation in Birmingham before going to UCL

Eg https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/life/accommodation/emergency-accommodation

https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/accommodation/booking-your-room-this-summer#:~:text=0121%20512%2021

In addition what about wellbeing service at both universities who could provide more support around grants/charities.

Finally around finances re religious reasons, whilst I don't think you stated your religion, ucl speak of bursaries and Alternative Student Finance scheme (tho frustratingly latter still being consulted on)

https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/sharia-compliant-finance

Sheffield Uni seem to have more info and some of the trusts they link are national.

https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/funding/not-taking-out-student-loan

Good luck in getting things sorted out and hope not too overwhelming in the meantime.

I am posting anonymously as actually a parent of someone looking into uni so don't really feel I should be involved in student discussions generally.

The OP might be regarded as intentionally homeless, and therefore not eligible for support from a local authority.

Try getting in touch with the Student Success Team at UCL, they support among other students care experienced and estranged students (including recently estranged students). They may only be able to provide support once you formally enroll however worth reaching out I think

You can read more about the support (generally) that UCL provides estranged students here: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/support-and-wellbeing-services/additional-information/specific-student-groups/estranged-students

There's also a link to the email address for the Student Success Team on that webpage.

Why not stay at Birmingham?

transferring unis mid course is not easy so im sure they had a very good reason to go through that process, telling op to retract all the effort they put in probably isn't the best thing for them to hear
