Photography degree - tell me your experiences

Those of you who have done a photography degree - how easy or difficult was it to find work afterwards?
Did you go freelance? Did you find a job working for someone else? Are you even still doing photography or did you end up finding work in a different field?
Was it worth doing photography for a degree? Would you recommend it?
I wrote a reply to this and TSR ate it :frown:

Not a photography student/graduate but if someone is interested in a photography career then a “commercial photography” degree is going to be a better option and fit than a course that’s more aligned to fine art photography.

There’s a few degrees with that in the title or similar specialisms (editorial, fashion etc). Some commercial photography courses are just titled “photography” though which is a pain. The only way to really find them is to look at their graduate shows online.

Not me but I know people who have done degrees in photography.

I know people who have done both freelance work and working for someone else. Some are working in completely unrelated fields. Lots of them in non graduate roles.

Would they recommend it?

The ones who have been successful probably would, however the people who were successful are the kind of individuals who have always been interested in photography and always wanted to be photographers. There's nothing else they would rather do and as such they were guaranteed to be successful regardless of the actual degree.

I would recommend other paths to begin with and then go from there.
